If you have been reading stories about inherited wealth and wondering what happens to those of us who did not inherit any, this is for you.
Let us begin with the obvious: family wealth matters.
Money creates access. It buys time, education, networks, safety, and room to make mistakes. If you can borrow money from home without interest, you are already ahead of someone whose family depends on them financially.
The Matthew effect is real: those who have are often positioned to acquire even more.
But inherited wealth is not the only factor that determines how far you can go.
And this is not one of those posts that pretends everyone starts from the same place. We do not.
The point is that your starting point is not the only force shaping your destination.
In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell explores several advantages that are easy to overlook.
One is timing.
His famous example is Canadian hockey. Because young players were grouped by age using a fixed cutoff date, children born early in the year were several months older than those born later. At that age, a few months created noticeable differences in size and coordination.
The older children were selected more often, received better coaching, practised more, and gradually became genuinely better.
A small initial advantage compounded.
The same thing happens outside sport.
Someone born in the 1980s encountered the internet differently from someone born in the late 1990s. One group experienced its early expansion; another arrived when platforms, careers, and business models were already established.
Neither experience is automatically better, but each creates different opportunities.
The same applies to software engineering today.
An engineer who spent four years writing and debugging code before AI coding tools became common has developed instincts that someone entering the field now must intentionally build.
At the same time, a younger engineer who learns to work effectively with AI may eventually outperform an experienced developer who moved into management and stopped building.
Every period gives something and takes something away.
The question is not only, “What advantages did other people receive?”
It is also, “What advantages are available in my time?”
Gladwell also popularised the idea that exceptional performance often grows from thousands of hours of focused practice.
Angela Duckworth approaches a related idea through Grit: sustained effort toward a meaningful long-term goal.
The exact number of hours is less important than the principle.
Many of us already have years of practice in something we barely recognise as a skill because it became normal to us.
Maybe you have spent years selling, organising people, solving technical problems, teaching, writing, negotiating, farming, caring for others, or surviving difficult environments.
Do not dismiss what you have repeatedly done simply because it came naturally.
That may be where your real advantage is hiding.
Another factor is practical intelligence.
Not just knowing things, but knowing how to use what you know.
Knowing when to speak.
Knowing whom to ask.
Knowing how to enter a room, understand what matters, and turn an opportunity into something tangible.
Culture matters too. But unlike in the past, culture is now more fluid. Through books, online communities, travel, mentors, and deliberate exposure, you can enter environments your family may never have known existed.
None of this erases structural inequality.
But it does mean you are not limited to measuring your future using only what your parents owned.
You are alive at a time when knowledge, tools, markets, and communities are more accessible than they have been for most of human history.
Your advantage may not be inherited capital.
It may be timing.
It may be accumulated practice.
It may be practical intelligence.
It may be the ability to learn from cultures beyond the one you inherited.
Start here:
Identify one thing you have practised for years, one opportunity created by the present moment, and one practical skill you need to develop next.
You may not have inherited great wealth.
But you are not starting with nothing.

Ray Kurzweil, the futurist who predicted the internet, smartphones, and AI says aging ends by 2032 (Save this)
Kurzweil, now 78 years old, told a live audience that humanity will reach longevity escape velocity by 2032 and he explained exactly what that means with mathematical precision.
Right now, for every year you live, you get back approximately five months of life expectancy from medical and scientific progress meaning you are losing roughly seven months of net life per calendar year.
Longevity escape velocity is the threshold where that ratio flips, for every year you live, you get back a full year or more from scientific progress, meaning your biological clock starts running backward.
Kurzweil's prediction is that threshold hits by 2032 and beyond that point, you do not simply stop dying of aging, you actively get younger every year.
The mechanism is AI-driven drug discovery at a scale that was physically impossible five years ago.
By 2030, Kurzweil argues, AI will be able to take a biological problem, generate millions of potential drug candidates, screen all of them, and run trials on simulated digital populations compressing decades of clinical research into weeks.
This is already happening.
David Sinclair's lab at Harvard used AI to virtually screen 8 billion molecules against aging targets and is now preparing human trials moving from $400,000 gene therapies toward a $100 pill that can reset biological age by 50 to 95% in four weeks.
Sinclair has already demonstrated the ability to reverse aging in mammals restoring sight in mice with optic nerve damage and reversing Alzheimer's symptoms in lab models.
Kurzweil's track record is what makes the 2032 claim impossible to dismiss.
He predicted the internet's global dominance in 1990, the defeat of a world chess champion by a computer in 1998, pocket-sized devices as primary communications tools in 1999, and AI passing professional exams in the mid-2020s, all before anyone else was saying it publicly.
If you are under 60 and in reasonable health, his message is stay alive, stay healthy, and get to 2032.
The tools on the other side of that date will be unlike anything medicine has ever produced.

Yes, you read that right.
Dangote literally built a full scale construction company to construct the refinery.
If that's not just business brilliance, what else is.
Now let me explain the brilliance in Dangote's move.
When Aliko Dangote announced his plan to build Africa’s largest oil refinery, many assumed he would contract foreign construction giants, the usual suspects from China, France, or the U.S.
But if you understand how this man thinks, you’ll know he doesn’t outsource destiny.
He knew something most entrepreneurs never grasp:
"You can’t build world-class infrastructure in Nigeria without first building the infrastructure to build it."
So what did he do?
He built the foundation before the refinery.
He established Dangote Projects Limited, a fully equipped construction company under the Dangote Industries umbrella, designed to handle everything from civil works to mechanical installations.
But it didn’t stop there.
To build that refinery, he had to first build the world around it.
Because in Nigeria, the challenge is never just the project, it’s the infrastructure that supports the project.
There were no roads strong enough to carry refinery equipment.
There was no consistent power supply to sustain construction.
The ports couldn’t handle the massive cargo.
So Dangote did what great industrialists do, he built everything he needed himself.
He built a 435-megawatt power plant to generate electricity for the refinery, fertilizer plant, and even parts of the surrounding communities.
He built internal roads, bridges, and a deep-sea port (the Lekki Port Access Jetty) to bring in heavy equipment.
He trained over 30,000 Nigerian engineers, welders, and technicians, turning skill scarcity into a local advantage.
He imported and owned over 2,000 heavy-duty construction machines, ensuring no delay from third-party contractors.
That’s not a businessman, that’s an industrial architect.
Dangote understood that to build a project of this magnitude in Nigeria, you must first control your ecosystem, from power to logistics to construction.
