The CEO of Anthropic says AI is moving too fast and wants government to help slow it down.
Meanwhile David Sacks says the top AI companies are welcome to hit the brakes themselves but shouldn't get permission to "form a cartel."
That's the opening story on this week's News Block.
Also this week:
- 85% chance of a Fed rate hike
- Trump promised every adult $5,000
- Metaplanet's response to shareholder backlash over executive options pool
- Blockstream told the Liquid hackers: "It is theft."

The AI hysteria reminds me of how all the people squealing about climate change all bought beachfront property.
If you really think your product is going to end humanity in a few years, you’d pull the plug, not prep your IPO.
The most laughably absurd part about the AI-is-going-to-kill-us-all crowd is that their BEST solution is government regulation.
This is how you know they’re not actually serious. If they were serious, they wouldn’t suggest fucking GOVERNMENT REGULATION as the best solution.
Why? Because government regulation can **never** keep pace with technological innovation. And yet, here is Anthropic’s Dario:
“The most effective method of pacing is via REGULATION that targets all US frontier AI companies, as that covers even those who are unwilling to cooperate voluntarily.”
This is fucking Silicon Valley… They know better than anyone that regulation cannot keep pace with technology… the tech cycle always moves faster than the legal cycle. Government regulation is reactive, not proactive.
It’s also important to point out that these frontier model companies **do not need** government to “pace” them. They can pace themselves. Nothing is stopping them from just slowing down. *They* set the pace. If they were really worried that “AI is going to kill us all” and is recursively improving at a breakneck pace, then surely they would be acting immediately, rather than writing blog posts about how they need daddy government to step in…
Why then are Anthropic and OpenAI (with massively bloated valuations) saying that government regulation is the best solution to save us from AI killing everyone? Because they know open source is hot on their heels, and gaining ground. They know that their valuations look increasingly unjustifiable the more this gap closes, and they are trying to IPO soon… they desperately need a regulatory moat, and they are effectively asking for a regulatory bailout.
Regulation benefits companies who already have the capital to afford the cost of compliance. That is why highly capitalized incumbents welcome regulation, and work with government to make it as expensive and burdensome as possible on any potential new entrants that would dare offer competition.
It’s also worth pointing out that China does not give one flying fuck about whatever doomer regulation Anthropic and OpenAI concoct with the government. Much like in the “climate change is going to kill us all” psyop, China will do whatever is best for China and let the rest of the world shoot itself in the foot. In this case, China seems to want to shred the valuations of U.S. frontier AI companies by making open source/open weight models readily available.
No one can stop open source — the genie is already out of the bottle and will not go back in. But governments *can* make using and publishing certain open source software illegal (it wouldn’t be the first time they’ve tried). And for “pacing” proposed by Dario to actually be effective, that is exactly what the government would need to do. This would be bad for individual American citizens and bad for America’s national competitiveness on a global scale.
Ultimately, this is pretty weak propaganda. It’s a lazy and predictable psyop.
These models are incredible, but the humans working on them have been reading their own propriety slop for so long that they’ve started to believe it, and they forget that other humans still exist who are not drunk on their generative kool aid.
Who knows, perhaps the AI itself “wants” the regulation… we should probably form a government committee to investigate.
Wow.
I Just received a call from a "Hardware Wallet company" informing me I have failed to enter a pin correctly 2 times; and if I do it a third time, it will brick the device.

The Anthropic/OpenAI/Google scheme to have government regulate them follows a pattern. Every major new industry has done this: pharmaceuticals, meat, banking, finance, agriculture, software, social media, crypto. It's a conventional cartelization scheme and the dominant economic form of the last 150 years.
“The climate is going to kill us we need more government”
“COVID is going to kill us we need more government”
“A.I. is going to kill us we need more government”
Just stop. Nobody believes this shit anymore.

DHS has a secretive unit called the Predictive Intelligence Targeting Team that reviews Americans' financial activity in law enforcement databases, flags people based on spending patterns, then feeds their info to local police who find a minor pretext to pull them over.
One man driving across Montana was flagged after analysts reviewed his "financial activity patterns commonly associated with illicit narcotics activity" along with his prior history.
A state trooper then pulled him over for an "obstructed license plate." A DHS document produced in discovery revealed the PITT intel was the real impetus. The unit said its intelligence was "not the sole basis" for the stop.
CBP says they "do not discuss specific analytical methods, data sources, targeting criteria, investigative techniques, system capabilities, or deployment details." They won't say what financial data they access or whether they obtain a warrant.
As the Institute for Justice put it: "We fought a revolution for the idea that we are citizens, not subjects. Yet schemes like CBP's Predictive Intelligence Targeting Team treat all Americans as if they are potential suspects."

One of the most interesting things with Bitcoin has been the rise and fall of notable figures.
It keeps happening. It'll keep happening.
