" When dealing with people, let us remember we are not dealing with creatures of logic. We are dealing with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudices and motivated by pride and vanity "
Virtual assistant calling & behaving like humans. Chatbots repeating their responses. AI at the name of efficiency is irritating at times. Brands thinking they can outsource their customer interactions to an AI may be unknowingly repeling them. Borderline disrespectful. #AI
@gurgaonpolice Mr @anandmahindra should stop making Thar. Thar should be banned for life time. I feel people who drive Thar suddenly start to have a different mindset once they get inside the car.
CCTV video release kiya hai bhai....isme dignity kahan se aa gayi? Why do we feel so much for somebody who is dead while treating people who are alive like shit man
No dignity for the young kid even after death.
His parents must have been shattered but they have done a tremendous disservice by levelling allegations and forcing an inquiry that exposed their son only.
Students at IIT Bombay are not protesting over just one suicide. They are protesting over a pattern. It was third suicide of IIT Bombay this year.
While I am strongly against the disproportionate power professors at IITs enjoy over students which I believe was one of the reason behind Sahil's suicide. I do not buy the casteism angle in this suicide.
Problem with India is that we politicize everything. In my 4 years at IIT Kanpur, I have never seen any professor getting involved in casteism. Neither my wife who is from IIT KGP nor my friends who are from Bombay, Delhi or Madras ever saw this. IITs are a sacred place for academics. Please keep it away from gutter politics.
The boy cheated. He was caught. Institute probably warned him a little too much and the boy out of fear committed suicide. Institute could have counseled the students better. But it's a systemic problem for another day and institutions will have to improve.
But from what I see, the professor is not at fault. He is not a criminal for doing his duties. He followed the protocols. On top of it, you are misusing SC/ST Act against him. One life is already destroyed, fucking don't destroy another life.
This story is not just limited to IITs. But none of this means that a prof or a director needs to be made an escape goat for somebody's impulsive action. Parents of kids need to work on their kid's now or never mentality they have for everything.
I don't want to get into the individual case of the young man who died by suicide at IIT Bombay. But suicides in IITs are not new. Infact its so common that I don't think they can be seen only as individual issues. There is a larger social problem here and it starts much before a student reaches IIT.
A middle class family puts all its hopes on its brightest child. The child is made to believe that crack JEE and your life is set.
Then coaching takes over. Factory line trained to excel in one exam and get a rank.
And then you reach IIT. With huge expectations from your parents. In a hypercompetitive environment, mostly confident English speaking cohort. For many students, especially those coming from small towns, this transition can be brutal.
Then there are problems within the institution itself. You learn about Disco (Disciplinary Committee) and how it ruins careers.
There is stigma surrounding students who are made to see the psychiatrist.
There is casteism too, both open and subtle.
There is intense academic pressure. Some professors are supportive. Some simply don't give two hoots about what a student may be going through.
Family members forwarding the crore package news items.
And all of this is happening while an 18, 19, 20 year old is still trying to figure out life. Add loneliness, heartbreak, substance abuse, academic setbacks and the pressure of living up to years of expectations. It is a dangerous cocktail.
We keep looking for something that was wrong with the individual. Maybe we should also look at everything that we have built around that individual.
@SaffronChargers both your relative and friend are overstating- a decent flat in Mumbai in an ok area is between 2.5-3Cr. 900-1000sqft. 2 bhk in NCR is between 1.3- 2 depending on what you call as decent here.

I am really sorry to say this, as a fellow IIT-IIM alumnus. Raghuram Rajan has been talking real crap about the Indian economy for the last several years.
He was IIT JEE AIR 100 in 1980. I was 218. My wife was 76. So I guess I have a right to feel especially disappointed :)
