Škoda Enyaq with 165,000 km suffered oil leakage from the e-motor differential at the driveshaft seal, which led to the remaining oil burning off in the gearbox and damaging the bearings. The e-motor is produced by Siemens Valeo (same supplier as in the Mercedes EQS), and this is one of the first samples we have seen.
The Enyaq was regularly serviced, but it is unclear whether the bearing failed first, creating an air gap at the seal that caused the oil to leak out, or if the oil leak occurred first and then damaged the bearing. Considering we have previously repaired a Tesla LDU (286 kW) that had run completely without oil for 160,000 km (because a Tesla technician forgot to refill it), it is likely that the bearing may have failed first.
What is concerning is that the monopoly practice of mandatory scheduled servicing to maintain warranty is completely misguided. Tesla, for example, has no mandatory services and not even a service booklet. Meanwhile, traditional OEMs force customers to spend around €800 every 20,000 km on service visits, where they replace brake fluid and coolant unnecessarily, adding avoidable CO₂ footprint and environmental waste—just to keep customers returning. Yet, the most critical item—oil replacement in the e-motor differential—is missing from every EU manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. It is absurd that, due to one liter of oil, manufacturers can charge up to €10,000 for drivetrain damage once the vehicle is out of warranty.
Even worse, VAG (VW Group) once again designs e-motors with bearing dimensions that are commercially unavailable—produced only for this transmission type. This unsustainable design approach, seen repeatedly in EU manufacturing, reduces repairability to zero and effectively forces scrapping of “rare earth material” components just because of six bearings intentionally made unavailable, even from the bearing manufacturer.
Since these e-motors are both expensive and widespread across the VAG lineup, we expect to see more inquiries for remanufacturing.
