Being in your early 40s is weird, man. People around your age are in every stage of life. You have people who are grandparents. You have people who have newborns. You have people dating 25-year-olds. You have people celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary. Some of them look 60, and some of them look 30. All the bases are covered when you are in your early 40s.
I'm self employed.
I've just worked out that I have to charge my customers over £900 per week in order to take home the equivalent yearly wage of someone on the new national minimum wage.
So I need to charge over £1,000 per week to be £100 better off than a minimum wage earner.
I have 12 individual costs associated with running my one man band business. No holiday pay. No money if I'm off work due to illness or anything else.
And this doesn't even take into consideration all the time spent on visiting new customers, pricing work, producing quotes etc, some of which is a complete waste of time when you don't get the work. All time that can't be charged for.
This is why, for many self employed people, it's just not worth it any more.
I've been self employed for 30 years and it's never been this bad.
@realpeteyb123 A visit to Hiroshima is a must. Far more relaxed than Tokyo and even Kyoto. Bullet train is a cool experience.
A visit to Miyajima (Shrine island) well worth your time.
Japanese baseball game is a fun experience.
@WingsScotland@Loretta37311 He also famously railed AGAINST anti-vaxxers and those against lockdowns early on, and subsequently changed his mind on that a couple of years ago.
I'm not sure any of this qualifies him as anything other than someone who changes his mind, on occasion.
@dieworkwear The pleats just below the waistband/in front of the pockets assist here as well. It allows the tapering of the fabric from the waist without producing further wrinkling/folds.
I try to avoid ever wishing ill on another human. But tonight, I have failed.
As ashamed as I am for it, I wish ill upon those who are celebrating the senseless murder of Charlie Kirk. It is evil personified.
Three interesting findings:
1. While men are nearly 18 percent faster than women in 5K races, they are only 11 percent faster in marathons, 3.7 percent faster at 50 miles, roughly even as they approach 100 miles, and then women routinely outpace men at races 195 miles and up.
😮 CEO of Octopus energy on Sky News yesterday morning -
“If we did location pricing, every region would be cheaper
Scotland would go from the most expensive electricity in Europe - to the cheapest.”
@MTabarrok@gfodor Humans have a biological minimum wage — 2000 calories per day, i.e. 100 watts
It costs about 50 gigajoules bare minimum to raise a human from baby to working age
What happens when the cost of building a new human-equivalent robot+compute is lower than 50 gigajoules?
TRIGGER WARNING: Nuance
Having looked at a lot of the reporting and inquiries into the grooming scandal, I think there are several things that can be said for certain.
1. There wasn’t much of a ‘complete’ government cover-up, mainly just government inaction.
5. George W. Bush dancing to a Russian folk song with Vladimir Putin in the background. This occurred in Sochi in 2008 but was made public recently to commemorate Putin's 20th year in power.
Spain built a 385.9 mile high speed train line from Madrid to Barcelona it cost £8.1bn.
The UK is still building a 140 mile high speed train line which will cost over £100bn.
Who is stealing all the money?
