Video footage from Saturday, 25 July 2026, shows the DA occupying the Council Chamber in the Podium Block of the Cape Town Civic Centre for what appeared to be an organisational party meeting.
Yet the next formal meeting of the City Council, scheduled for Thursday, 30 July 2026, will again be held online.
This creates an extraordinary contradiction: the governing party apparently enjoys physical access to the Council Chamber for its own internal activities, while opposition councillors and the democratic institution of Council are kept out of it.
EXCLUSIVE: Ryan Coetzee helped negotiate the DA into the GNU while serving as CEO of an international advisory company. Three months later, the DA hired that company under a confidential contract to manage its transition to government. 🧐https://t.co/V6ei7HOOEv
It's very difficult to know from this 'investigative' mess of innuendo, tenuous extrapolation, wild supposition, and outright smears, whether Daily Maverick is trying to expose another Bell Pottinger or is itself another Bell Pottinger. On balance, I think the latter...
🙄 A toxic mix of untruths, half-truths connected to other half-truths, invidious juxtapositions, omissions (she leaves out all the answers to her questions she didn’t like), carefully worded suggestions of things for which she has no evidence and a reliance on four (4!) people in a political party of tens of thousands. I did invite her to ask our ministers and deputy ministers what they thought but she carefully avoided doing so. And in the end, despite every effort, it amounts to nothing. Well, that’s 5 minutes of my life I won’t get back, but on the upside it’s Friday and I have a decent bottle of wine to look forward to later. For now though, it’s back to work, trying to help a part of South Africa’s government run a little better (humblest apologies).
