For 45 years, Berkeley built virtually no new housing. By the mid-2010s, it was the most expensive college town in America. Shortly thereafter, YIMBYs took over and kicked off a building boom. Today, nominal rents are below 2018 rates—remarkable progress on affordability.
@mnolangray@BarneyFlames Oakland schools are one example of how hard it is politically to shut down schools. They've been fighting since 2022 and still haven't shut them down despite low enrollment.
@quarterdome Interesting. I was surprised and disappointed. I had a lot of respect for his doggedness on housing and haven't been paying much attention to other issues. I guess his AI legislation was misguided but was vetoed anyway. What were the other ones you disagreed with?
For years, I’ve condemned Netanyahu and his extremist government and the devastation they’ve inflicted on Gaza. It’s why I’ve been clear I won’t support U.S. funding for the destruction of Palestinian communities. I’ve stopped short of calling it genocide, but I can’t anymore.
@jaycaspiankang "She pushed the federal bureaucracy to incorporate concerns about equity into routine business — so much so that her advisers seldom briefed her on policies without having prepared a ready answer about their impact on women, Black/Hispanic people and other racial minorities."
@jaycaspiankang The whole article is worth quoting at length: "During the pandemic, she repeatedly asked her vice-presidential staff for demographic breakdowns on Covid vaccination recipients and pressed the administration’s health officials to address gaps, according to two former officials.
The whole country moved on and alameda county is still counting the votes. The next update is going to be on Monday (I guess everyone needs their weekend). https://t.co/UJEbVTEZf3
A small example of sheer incompetence in California:
We have the lowest % of votes counted in the entire country and its not even close.
36 hours after polls close, CA has 56% of votes counted 😱. 46 states have 90%+ counted. In Alameda County, we have only 30% (!) - one of the slowest counties in the country.
Incompetence is pervasive throughout California and Alameda County and the election is no exception. Counting ballots is a small problem for a democracy, but its emblematic of a greater issue:
California is poorly run. We need to fix it if we are going to win nationally.
@JesseJenkins@robinsonmeyer +1 to 3 minutes feeling a bit rushed (maybe extend to 5?), and the sound was jarring, I'd have appreciated something a bit more melodic. Otherwise, it was great.
@Frannydink@maxdubler@chrsdcook @FashunNewton @Sandionx I love berkeley history and the sixties but keeping people's park as it was was not a good way to commemorate it.
@Frannydink@maxdubler@chrsdcook @FashunNewton @Sandionx We live three blocks away and are so happy this nasty place will finally be gone. My family couldn't never use it as a green space anyway. It was never safe or pleasant in the 25 years I've lived in Berkeley.
