#CoCoDEV Project Highlights:
Coffee & cocoa nursery operators are participating in a week-long practical retooling exercise @narouganda@rwebitaba research institute, Kabarole. Key areas of the training include; improved propagation procedures, general management and operating a coffee nursery and mother gardens as a business. The trainees are identified from key project areas across the country: Ntoroko, Lwengo, Masaka, Mayuge, Kibale, Mubende, Mbale, Lira, Ntungamo, Kamwenge, Karamoja, Gulu.
@narouganda coffee & cocoa research team @NaCORIUganda is taking lead on the training exercise.
The project is being implemented by @CoffeeUganda and @narouganda.
COCODEV - The Coffee, Cocoa Value-Chain Development Project was officially launched in 2014. The project aims at increasing availability & accessibility of high-quality foundation/starter seedlings for cocoa, arabica and robusta coffee. The project supports certified nursery operators to multiply the best seedlings & ensure that they reach farmers. Funded by @EUinUG through @CoffeeUganda is enhancing the quality of coffee and cocoa in 🇺🇬 through availing quality seedlings & postharvest handling practices. Together we are laying the ground work for a more resilient and prosperous future for Uganda's coffee and cocoa industries.
COVAC PROJECT:
@NaCORIUganda is implementing a cocoa project entitled: Cocoa Value Chain Development Project in West Nile (COVAC). The project is a collaboration between NaCORI and Canaan Global Leadership Center and Kijami Table Ltd (Korean based registered entities). The project is aimed at increasing cocoa production and productivity in the West Nile Sub-region of Uganda. This week, the project team conducted practical trainings along the cocoa value chain. The trainings happened at NaCORI and farmer fields in Mayuge, Mukono. A community-based project extension worker from West Nile attended the training to enhance his capacity to train cocoa farmers in the region. # CocoaNewGold

Gap filling is important in coffee production. It involves replacing dead, diseased, or weak seedlings within a newly established field to maintain the intended plant population.
WHY IT MATTERS:
✅️Gaps created by dead or dried plants reduce the number of productive trees per hectare, leading to lower yields. Replacing these gaps ensures optimal use of the land.
✅️Ensures uniformity and easy management: Managing weeds, harvesting, spraying, and fertilizer application are easily done across the field.
✅️Incase of disease infestation due to diseases such as Coffee Wilt Disease, removing the infected material & replacing it, is crucial for preventing the spread of the pathogen to neighboring trees.
✅️Gaps can disrupt the shade canopy, exposing surrounding coffee plants to excessive sunlight and high temperatures. Replacing the tree helps maintain the necessary shade and humidity levels.
✳️Use only disease free seedlings to fill the gaps. #KRCoffeeVarieties

My visit to Iceland concluded with a talk delivered to students of the 2025–2026 cohort participating in the six-month training @gro_ftp. The two lectures focused on Africa’s aquaculture landscape and the role of NARO in catalysing transformative aquaculture research in Uganda.
The Practical training on #BlackSoldierFly (#BSF) mass rearing and scaling of #ClimateSmartFish Feed Innovations in Uganda is underway in Uganda’s capital, Kampala. It is running from to October 21, to October 25, 2025 and is organized by @ASARECA in collaboration with the National Agricultural Research Organization (@narouganda ), Centre for Insect Research and Development (CIRD) in Kawanda, and @ICIPE
The overall objective of the practical training, farmer field day and #technologydissemination exercise is to learn about BSF mass rearing, on-farm fish feed formulation and dissemination of BSF production starter kits to strengthen capacities of aquaculture innovation platforms to scale up proven #CSA TIMPs.
During the training, farmers from over 32 districts drawn from 9 Aquaculture Innovation Platforms across 9 subregions of Uganda will learn about BSF mass rearing, on-farm fish feed formulation and dissemination. They will receive BSF production starter kits to strengthen capacities of the Aquaculture Innovation Platforms to scale up proven CSA TIMPs.
The training is funded under the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP-XP4) Programme, which is financed by the @EU_Commission and managed by @IFAD. It builds on the structures of the #InnovationPlatforms supported by the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (@PressACP ) through the ACP Innovation Fund, which is funded by the @EU_Commission (@EU).
