Academic ableism is so wildly pervasive it is built into everything in the academy. And yet, once again, I've been asked to a meeting to describe its direct impacts and offer solutions. Ones that I know admin will not take. 1/5
I'm on a podcast! Sherri said it better than me (see below) but I learnt so much from working at RCOT particularly some of my conversations with Sherri. It was great to be able to continue the conversation and chat to @KwakuOT, thank you.
Great to be on @ot_chill last week. Thank you @KwakuOT for the opportunity.
2 months ago I completed an internship with @theRCOT alongside @bobalind. Working at RCOT was an eye opening experience and I would highly recommend it students/new graduates. (1/3)

Dear college instructors writing syllabi, having to go to the disability services office to request an accommodation is itself a structural disadvantage rooted in ableism. Educate yourself about how to teach with universal design and take the burden off your students.
Dear medical professionals, when you listen to your patients, consider these helpful swaps to avoid gaslighting, to assist in the dismantling of discrimination and ableism, and to help make patients feel heard even when they’re undiagnosed.
A thread. /1
Calling all #OccupationalTherapy pre-reg learners, soon to conduct a dissertation or research project. We want to hear your thoughts/perceptions of the literature review process. We are looking for
Max.12 learners to participate in an online focus group, on 12th Aug #Student 1/3
Many students and staff with disabilities simply do not apply for accommodations. So when claims are made like "well no one else has ever needed this" or "this seems excessive, another student only needed x" they are way off the mark. 1/5
@aut_psych Autistic OT student here I have disclosed on all placements (but was dx'd 7 years ago) last year to make it a nicer process I wrote myself a strength-based support plan which has been great. It's dependent on your supervisor, would recommend chatting to a uni tutor if you can.
I've added Wuthering Heights to this video of a panda sliding around in the snow so I can watch it every morning when I wake up and have an instant morale boost.
Like this tweet if:
- You are a woman
- You have ever been ignored, gaslit, accused of exaggerating or told its all in your head by a doctor when you sought help for a medical problem
I just wanna see something.
@chaotic_kat@bennessb I sleep like a plank on my front head turned to the side (occasionally with my hips/a leg on a pillow) arms either tucked under me or by my side 😂 if my knees are bad occasionally a pillow under my calves, it's not for everyone but works for me
@SophieJSmith3@SusanMadigan3 Depends what you mean by expert, I'm an MSc Occupational Therapy student with a BSc (and personal interest) in Psychology?
