Nobody in the history of Test cricket has ever bowled better in a defeat than Javagal Srinath. He took 13 wickets for 132 at Eden Gardens and was named Player of the Match. India still lost by 46 runs. Happy birthday to An engineering graduate who bowled at 157 km/h on dead subcontinental pitches. Imran Khan called him the most underrated bowler in the world.

The story of Srinath is pretty interesting, painful, incredible and mind boggling. Mostly when he performed amazingly, his teammates disappointed him by not winning that match. I mean this guy literally got the best match figures any bowler in history has ever managed in a losing cause, and he still had to watch his side hand it back twice. In February 1999, the Asian Test Championship at Eden Gardens, and Srinath reduced Pakistan to 26 for 6 on the first morning with a display of seam bowling that had no answer to it, finishing with 5 for 46. Then, second innings, with Saeed Anwar building a big score and the match slipping, he took the second new ball and produced 8 for 86 to end it. Thirteen wickets for 132 runs in one Test match. But then India were bowled out for 223 and then 232 chasing 279, and Pakistan won by 46 runs. The judges gave him the Player of the Match award anyway, jointly with Anwar. Think about how rarely that happens to a man on the losing side.

Ah, Srinath was not some raw natural who stumbled into fast bowling. He earned an engineering degree in instrumentation from Sri Jayachamarajendra College in Mysore, took a hat-trick on his first-class debut for Karnataka against Hyderabad, and brought that same mechanical precision to a repeatable, genuinely fast action, regularly crossing 150 km/h, with one delivery clocked at 157 against Zimbabwe at Paarl on the 1996-97 South Africa tour. He wasn't clocking this onon green English seamers or Australian bounce, but on dead, slow, spin-friendly subcontinental tracks that were designed to make his entire skill set irrelevant. Imran Khan noticed exactly that, and said publicly that after watching Srinath consistently hit 150 km/h on those surfaces, he considered him the most underrated fast bowler in the world.

And the crowd that day, around 465,000 people across five days, is remembered for a near-riot over the result and the umpiring, while the passage everyone still replays is Shoaib Akhtar's twin yorkers to Dravid and Tendulkar. The greatest bowling performance in the history of Test defeats got buried under all of it.

That was Srinath's career in miniature. A hundred and fifty kilometres an hour on pitches built for spinners, for a decade, mostly alone, and mostly remembered by people who were paying close attention.

आज मैं अपनी प्रोफाइल पिक्चर (DP) बदलकर #SaveAravalli अभियान का हिस्सा बन रहा हूँ। यह सिर्फ एक फोटो नहीं, एक विरोध है उस नई परिभाषा के खिलाफ जिसके तहत 100 मीटर से कम ऊंचाई वाली पहाड़ियों को 'अरावली' मानने से इंकार किया जा रहा है। मेरा आपसे अनुरोध है कि अपनी प्रोफाइल पिक्चर बदलकर इस अभियान से जुड़ें:

अरावली के संरक्षण को लेकर आए इन बदलावों ने उत्तर भारत के भविष्य पर एक बड़ा सवाल खड़ा कर दिया है। यह निर्णय हमारे अस्तित्व के लिए खतरनाक है क्योंकि:

1️⃣ मरुस्थल एवं लू के खिलाफ दीवार: अरावली कोई मामूली पहाड़ नहीं, बल्कि कुदरत की बनाई 'ग्रीन वॉल' (Green Wall) है। यह थार रेगिस्तान की रेत और गर्म हवाओं (लू) को दिल्ली, हरियाणा और यूपी के उपजाऊ मैदानों की ओर बढ़ने से रोकती है। अगर छोटी पहाड़ियाँ (Gaping Areas) खनन के लिए खुल गईं, तो रेगिस्तान हमारे दरवाज़े तक आ जाएगा और गर्म हवाएं तापमान को बढ़ा देंगी।

2️⃣ प्रदूषण से रक्षा: ये पहाड़ियाँ और यहाँ के जंगल NCR और आसपास के शहरों के 'फेफड़ों' (Lungs) की तरह काम करते हैं। ये धूल भरी आंधियों (Dust Storms) को रोकते हैं और जानलेवा प्रदूषण को कम करने में सबसे बड़ी भूमिका निभाते हैं। दिल्ली और आसपास के इलाके में अरावली के बावजूद इतनी गंभीर स्थिति है तो अरावली के बिना कैसी स्थिति होगी, उसकी कल्पना करना भी वीभत्स है।

3️⃣ भूजल (Groundwater): अरावली हमारे लिए पानी का मुख्य रिचार्ज ज़ोन है। अरावली की चट्टानें बारिश के पानी को ज़मीन के भीतर भेजकर भूजल रिचार्ज करती हैं। अगर पहाड़ खत्म हुए, तो भविष्य में पीने के पानी की गंभीर कमी का सामना करना पड़ेगा,जिससे वन्यजीव लुप्त होने की कगार पर आ जाएंगे तथा इकोलॉजी को खतरा होगा।

वैज्ञानिक सच यह है कि अरावली एक निरंतर शृंखला (Continuous Chain) है। इसकी छोटी पहाड़ियाँ भी उतनी ही अहम हैं जितनी बड़ी चोटियाँ। अगर दीवार में एक भी ईंट कम हुई, तो सुरक्षा टूट जाएगी।

हम केंद्र सरकार और माननीय सुप्रीम कोर्ट से विनम्र निवेदन करते हैं कि भावी पीढ़ियों के सुरक्षित भविष्य के लिए इस परिभाषा पर पुनर्विचार (Reconsider) करें। अरावली को 'फीते' या 'ऊंचाई' से नहीं, बल्कि इसके 'पर्यावरणीय योगदान' (Ecological Impact) से आंका जाए।
