Yesterday I did a deep dive into this stunner for my PhD thesis and have to say that it was even better the second time around. As I came to the end I found myself sobbing from the beauty & devastation of it all. For me, 'It Lasts Forever and Then It's Over' is a perfect novel.
I reviewed Adam Ouston’s Mine for The Conversation talking about the pervasiveness of styles indebted to famous authors: Bernhardism, Sebaldism, and now Krasznahorkai-ism, which I call K-ism (link in next tweet )
This is actually super-interesting because it allows you to see the motion of Tarkovsky’s camera on the long takes. Gives you a sense of the architecture of the film!
Watched Reichardt's The Mastermind and Night Moves over the last two nights and was just utterly blown away by both. Did not realise the US could still produce films like this.
Having just finished Midnight Star, and Now, Autonomy back to back I gotta say: Max Easton never fucking misses. Had some goosebumps and some tears. What a ride. Looking forward to @GiramondoBooks launching it soon.
RIP Tony Rayns. Every cinephile encounters his writing at some point, and it’s shocking how his reviews/blurbs are some of the only meaningful words you can find on countless Asian films. Here’s a clip from Seo Won-tae’s film on Tony where he says he loves 간장게장 (soy crab).
Tony Rayns is why we know who Apichatpong Weerasethakul is! He did the original subtitles for most of the Wong Kar-wai movies we love! He is so important to korean cinema that there is a documentary about it!
