How Hired Thugs Obstructed My Visit to Benue State

Yesterday, I attended the opening of the national campaign office of an opposition presidential candidate, Governor Seyi Makinde in Abuja. My presence was intended to demonstrate that politics can and should be conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect and civility. As Governor of Anambra State, I made it a point during electioneering to welcome visiting opposition members personally, provided they acted within the ambits of the law.

Guided by that same commitment to decency over partisanship, I travelled to Benue this morning, arriving at approximately 9:00 a.m. on a purely humanitarian mission: to visit the grieving families affected by the horrific killings in Yelwata, where over 270 people were massacred.

Regrettably, our convoy was prevented from proceeding to the community by thugs chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.” It was deeply distressing to witness such hostility. I came to Benue not for partisan politics, but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer comfort at a moment of unimaginable sorrow. That a mission intended purely to show solidarity, compassion, and support could be obstructed in this manner is deeply alarming.

At a time when our nation should be united in grief and resolute in preventing further bloodshed, we must reject any action capable of deepening our divisions. The people of Benue - and all Nigerians - deserve to sleep without fear. They deserve to travel without fear. They deserve to cultivate their land without fear. Above all, they deserve a country where the state places the protection of human life far above political expediency.

Although we were unable to reach the community today, our thoughts and prayers remain steadfastly with the victims, their families, and the entire Yelwata community. We shall continue to work until the primary responsibility of government - the safeguarding of every Nigerian life - is restored. Until then, we cannot truly say we have built the nation our people deserve.

We arrived in Benue this morning at about 9 a.m. with His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, with one simple and deeply human purpose: to visit the victims and families affected by the horrific massacre in Yelwata, where over 250 people were reportedly killed. We came to mourn. We came to console. We came to stand with our fellow Nigerians at a moment of unimaginable pain. But, unfortunately, we were stopped from reaching Yelwata.

What makes this particularly disturbing is the information that has been reliably communicated to us concerning what happened. We were informed that different groups had allegedly been organised and positioned at various locations, beginning from the airport and along the route towards Yelwata, with the apparent intention of preventing Mr. Peter Obi from reaching the community.

The Governor's SSA on Youths was involved in organising some of these groups, with individuals were carrying knives, clubs and firearms. Whether one supports Mr Peter Obi or not, no responsible government should ever allow political differences to degenerate into the obstruction or intimidation of a peaceful presidential candidate, particularly one travelling to visit victims of a massacre.

INEC has flagged off the campaign period. Mr. Peter Obi is a presidential candidate participating in Nigeria's democratic process. At such a time, every security agency has a duty to protect him, just as it has a duty to protect every other candidate and every Nigerian. So what happened today raises a fundamental question: Where was the government? Where were the security agencies? Why should a presidential candidate require a struggle simply to reach Nigerians who are grieving? And, most importantly, why would anybody want to prevent a condolence visit to people who have lost their loved ones?

This is bigger than Peter Obi. This is bigger than the NDC. This is bigger than Benue. This is about the kind of country we are becoming. If government machinery can allegedly be mobilised to obstruct a peaceful visit by a presidential candidate, then we must have the courage to say that something has gone terribly wrong with our democracy. Government is not supposed to be an instrument of intimidation. Security agencies are not political weapons. Public office is not private property. And the people of Nigeria are not subjects to be controlled.

I find it deeply troubling that while citizens are crying for protection from terrorists, bandits and other violent actors, political energy can allegedly be directed towards stopping a presidential candidate from visiting the very people who have suffered such violence. That is not leadership. That is a failure of priorities.

The people of Yelwata do not need political calculations. They need security. They need justice. They need compensation and rehabilitation. They need their government to stand beside them. And Nigerians need a political system where candidates can travel freely, citizens can associate freely, and security agencies protect everyone impartially.

We cannot continue like this. Nigeria deserves better than political thuggery. Nigeria deserves better than intimidation. Nigeria deserves better than a government that appears more interested in controlling political movement than protecting human lives.

Today, we were prevented from reaching Yelwata.
But the suffering of the people cannot be blocked by barricades. Their pain cannot be silenced by thugs. Their dead cannot be erased by politics.

The Nigerian people are watching. And history will remember not only those who were killed, but also how those in positions of authority responded when their people needed them most.

This is the Nigeria we must change. A Nigeria where government protects, rather than intimidates. A Nigeria where security serves the people, rather than political interests. A Nigeria where every life matters. And a Nigeria where, when tragedy strikes, leadership does not stay away. Leadership shows up. -DrMo
