The word "mistake" contains an entire theology.

It preserves the intention.

It says: we meant well, it went wrong, we are still the people who mean well.

The alternative word, "crime," does something the theology cannot survive.

Crime implies a perpetrator.

Crime implies a victim with standing.

Crime implies accountability.

So it is never a crime.

It is always a mistake.

Always.

Across every administration. Every decade. Every continent.

There's a specific American reaction when you point out what their military has done.

"You just hate America."

Not: is this true?

Not: how do I reconcile this with what I was taught?

"You hate America."

The country has been converted into a person.

Criticizing its documented actions is reframed as personal animosity.

The conversation about evidence is replaced with a conversation about your feelings toward a nation-as-identity.

This is not defensiveness.

This is a trained reflex.

The reflex exists because if the country can be criticized on its record, the people who built their sense of self on that country's righteousness become criticizable too.

It was never about America.

It was always about them.

The #Robodebt Royal Commission findings were handed to the shiny new NACC on 6 July, 2023 - 5 days after the NACC began operations.

But it took the NACC almost a full year to declare that they would not be investigating the Robodebt allegations of corruption.

It took 1 year to say they wouldn't be doing anything.

What exactly took them so long?

Why did it take so long for the NACC to say they wouldn't be doing anything about Robodebt?

It's hard to say but for one thing, the NACC was busy racking up $1.1 million in travel costs in its first year of operation.

It appears, that while the Robodebt investigation was of no importance, the NACC staff were however, very busy undertaking 124 separate 'presentations' around Australia and overseas.

Not sure what exactly 'presentations' are in this sense, but they certainly accounted for a lot of air fares and accommodation.
