Happy new year. Instead of telling you my new year resolution, I have one for you. Social media posts are full of positive self-promoting posts (mine are certainly no exception) which eclipse posts about mental health struggles and the day to day reality of the challenges we face. That's fine, I think most of us know how to calibrate our friends' and followers streams and seek a distance between our private lives and the persona we choose to project outwards. However, in the LinkedIn frenzy of perfect careers and total and utter obsession and dedication to our no doubt humanity saving technology innovations that we are driving, we can loose sight of the mental toll that the life of work can inflict upon us. Last year I wrote a short ad hoc article about dealing with bullying and harassment in the workplace, somewhat based on my own personal experience, along with a few coping strategies. I'm not a psychiatrist or therapist, so what I have written is in no way "professional". However, I'm startled by the number of people that have contacted me to relate their own similar personal experiences, and who have appreciated the random coping strategies that I list, so I am repeating my post today. Periods of poor mental health are things that occur to a huge number of people, and I hope we can better recognize the symptoms and the need to look after ourselves and seek help when we need it.
