Here at Cambridge City Hall this evening to reiterate my call for a #CeasefireNow.

I stand in solidarity with Jews, Muslims, Palestinians, Israelis, and people of all faiths and backgrounds who are calling for peace, for de-escalation, for the safe return of hostages, for the delivery of humanitarian aid, and for an end to the killing of innocent civilians.

I condemn Hamas’ horrific October 7th attack on Israel, and I support Israel’s right to defend itself.

At the same time, I recognize the systemic oppression of the Palestinian people by the Israeli government, and how this contributes to a horrific cycle of violence. I believe that Palestine deserves to be free.

In the words of Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, “vengeance is not a foreign policy doctrine.” Thank you to @RepPressley for being a national leader in the call for a ceasefire. And thank you to all of the activists who are holding the U.S. government and its officials accountable in this moment of profound consequence.

As State Representative, I continue to stand in support of our First Amendment and Article XVI rights — rights that give us all the freedom to criticize our own government and the actions of other governments, as well.

I recognize the pain, hurt, anguish, and fear so many in our community are feeling right now, and I hope that we can hold each other in our hearts, even when we disagree or see things from a different perspective.

As Congresswoman Pressley has stated: “Every action taken by policymakers in this moment should be in pursuit of peace – not an escalation of violence and bloodshed.” I hope the council will take action this evening to join the call for a ceasefire now.
