Massive turnout for the funeral of Ayatollah Khamenei. The failure to recognise the popular support for the Iranian government was a key reason for the failure of the US war. The Iranians were no more likely to assist the US in toppling their own government than the Iraqis were to welcome the US as liberators.

Why this disastrous miscalculation? Government-approved narratives in the West must always strip opponents of legitimacy in order to build the liberal democratic case for regime change and war. Any dissenting voices in the West can then be smeared as not caring about the people they are supposedly planning to "liberate" with bombs, or the dissenting voices are merely portrayed as traitors.

The consequence? We fall for our own war propaganda every time and then pay the price. Even if you hate and want to defeat Iran, Russia, China, and other opponents of Western global hegemony, it is surely still in your interest to get the analysis right.
