@Denison60426806@Bloke_Baz E.g. you can be an SSI (means-tested disabled) recipient without much or any work history, receive ~900/mo, and be eligible for SNAP on that basis. For obvious reasons, disabled people are overrepresented among the chronically poor
@Denison60426806@Bloke_Baz Some do. But my point is more general: you'd be surprised how often people are just getting by for long stretches of time on extremely low (to no) wages
@Denison60426806@Bloke_Baz There are lots and lots of people living without jobs. Permanently, no, unless they are chronically homeless. But many "live" on a cobbled-together array of SNAP, "in-kind" support, subsidized/transitional housing, food/clothes pantries, TANF, and SSI (max $994/mo)...
@TLiterarian I'm realizing I totally missed your point about distinguishing French/American culture lol. That's what I get for checking this slop cesspool before coffee. But yeah OP and his ilk remain fucking morons
@secondbyfarce You don't think there are cases where music/art tells us something about social forms, relations of production, etc.? E.g., Dust Bowl folk, 90s rap, + Raï were pretty good at expressing the social experience of downward economic pressure. Maybe "reading" it is overdetermined tho
@JSimonsvu35@davidbessis I think it is! But your comment reminds me of Mary McCarthy's quip: "It took [Salinger] ten years to write _Franny and Zooey_, and it reads as though it were written in ten minutes."
Interesting enough, this is a way of undermining class identity as the overwhelming social division within American society. If we're all Americans, the real division is class, not national. So the myth has to be maintained that America is a confusing collection of nations.
@gudcur1 Great when you admit you arent a communist and, like any soc-dem, your position is just about advocating peoples needs being met in capitalism (it will never be the case everyone in the worlds needs are met in capitalism, so this just amounts to bourgeois cynical system apologia)
@Race__Realist@Jnjokovic@TheLaurenChen As a layperson having read several of @Race__Realist's excellent papers, I want to ask: can't one object to the conceptual status of 'race' itself on similar grounds? In other words, the point about race and IQ is moot if the folk theory of race was already conceptually empty...
@culture_think@MattPolProf But how does that articulation (which I don't totally disagree with) pertain to your own outright rejection of patient, substantive argument in favor of mocking, parody, and insult? Surely you're seeing the irony of your own "enactment" of the symptoms, here?
@Kulambq Tim Berne top 20? No fuckin way. No fuckkkkin way. He's led some good bands, and I've seen him rip it live, but...get serious. That choice alone is more than enough to discredit this very, very tendentious list (which is full of great stuff, sure!)
