A good 3v3 session doesn’t need lots of rules.
Set up the pitches. Let the players play. Then change one thing.
The way teams move.
The way they score.
The type of goal.
The challenge changes, but the game remains simple.
SSG | Receiving to Play Forward.
⚽️ Created On: @SSPlanner
🟩 Set Up:
✔️Narrow pitch (30 yrds by 14 yrds) split into thirds with shaded zones (see image).
👕 Teams:
✔️ 🟢s are support players they are limited to 1 touch. They have to play into attacking team ⚫️s.
✔️🟢s can pass to each other once then it must go into a ⚫️.
✔️ 1 x 🟢 can move up to support the attack, as they leave a third. Still one touch limit.
✔️⚫️s v 🔴s Start 1v1 in the first two zones.
🗣️ How to play:
✔️ 🟢s play into ⚫️s. They have to get turned and dribble into the next zone before being able to combine.
✔️ Once in the middle zone the ⚫️s can dribble or pass over the next line.
✔️ Finally the ⚫️s must get into the shaded zone before scoring in the mini goal.
✔️🔴s win the ball and can score off the 🟢s with a 1st time finish or by dribbling into the end zone to score.
♻️ Rotate the roles of the players so they experience each.

🗣️How to Play:
✔️ ⚫️s work the ball from the 2 x 🔵 CBs through the zones of the pitch to play off the 1 x 🔵 SK to finish first time into the mini goals on either side of the 🔵 SK.
✔️ 🔴s score in either of the mini goals behind the 2 x Blue CBs.

👨🏫 Review: Body position to receive the ball and face forward.
🚫 Restriction: ⚫️s can only pass backward off 1 touch.

3v3 is not just a mini game.
It is a scaled version of football.
The pitch, distances and numbers are reduced, but players must still create and protect space, support the ball, attack, defend and react when possession changes.
The scale changes. The principles remain in play.

Which way is the arrow turning?
Now turn it the other way…
For most people (me included) this is tough to do. Your eyes move around, trying to find an angle that might change the direction of the arrow (it’s possible…trust me!) You look high, you look low. You look left, you look right. You soften your eyes to scan broadly and you harden your vision to sharpen the narrowed detail…
…eventually most people can change the direction of the arrow. But even then, you can return to this image later and struggle to achieve the same visual success. An hour ago you got it…now you’re failing again.
I like this optical illusion, because for me it’s akin to the difficulty we face in trying to reframe a challenging situation. It’s not easy to see the positives when we’ve lost the deal, failed to get the promotion, been dropped from the team, or had another bad game.
You have to work hard with your interpretation of the world around you and the world inside of you.
What did go well?
What strengths did I exhibit?
What opportunities are actually there?
What does a helpful response look like?
How would an optimist hold themselves right now?
Questions that aid attentional flex and behavioural adaptation. Questions that help you to self-regulate and take control. Questions that aid well-being, persistence, and progress irrespective of current performances and outcomes.
Re-appraisal and reframing are hard. They require cognitive effort, meta-skills, and a degree of personal insight that requires practice.

One setup. Six different ways to play.
The 3v3 World Cup lets you change the challenge without rebuilding the entire session.
Run the basic competition—or introduce formats built around dribbling, passing, shooting and different types of goal.
You can find the full resource in my pinned post.
The best youth coaches are focused on the player and his or her experience.
Is each player moving from baseline to better…
Emotionally
Physically
Socially
Intellectually
Skillfully
Tactically
If so, the player and coach have won already.

3v3 does not only increase attacking involvement.
One defender can apply pressure. A second can provide cover. The third introduces balance and protection elsewhere.
The responsibilities change as the ball moves, allowing collective defending to emerge without fixed positions.
More decisions. Better connected defenders.

An intelligent player can remain sufficiently regulated to perceive clearly, attend selectively, recognize possibilities, make decisions, and adapt their actions to the constantly changing game.
None of this can be screamed in from the sidelines.

In the game, we find different types of interaction.
Someone once asked me about the "Spanish method."
One thing: we spent a lot of time improving the player–teammate relationship, and player + teammate vs opponent.
Are some coaches still stuck on the initial levels? 🤔

Shifting the focus to side pressure. Most dribbling practices cover front pressure. These practices work on different angles while developing scanning, shielding, and technical work with all parts of the feet 👇
