A second brain, explained like you are five. Everyone says build one, almost nobody says what it is

A chat is a whiteboard. You write on it, you talk, you close the tab, someone wipes it. Tomorrow you walk in and it is blank, so you explain yourself again.

A second brain is a filing cabinet that files itself. One folder of plain text on your computer. You drop things in. Claude reads the whole cabinet, puts each thing where it belongs, draws a line to whatever it relates to, and answers questions across all of it.

Three things make it work:

1. You do not write your own profile. Claude interviews you one question at a time and saves the answers, so every session starts with it already knowing you

2. Every note points at other notes. After a month those lines make a map, and it surfaces connections you had forgotten you made

3. It is plain text you own. Point a different model at it next year and nothing breaks

The whiteboard is not useless, it got demoted. It is where you think. The cabinet is where the thinking accumulates.
