@TheCinesthetic Colonel Nicholson, A Bridge Too Far. When I was a kid I saw him as an antagonist and collaborater. I rewatched it as an adult and realized he was being sensible and protecting his men.

@Spawn0289 @TheCinesthetic Spawn?

@TheCinesthetic "Why love, if losing hurts so much? I have no answers anymore: only the life I have lived. Twice in that life I've been given the choice: as a boy and as a man. The boy chose safety, the man chooses suffering. The pain now is part of the happiness then. That's the deal."

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@MuseZack The parts of the movie where the occult is played straight and taken seriously, like Egon discussing Ivo Shandor's cult ("After the first world war he thought society was too sick to survive") or Winston and Ray quoting the Book of Revelations are effectively creepy.

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@CWingUexkull Well everyone knows that Verhoeven meant his movie as a critique or satire of fascism. That's pretty obvious aesthetically, and that's the filmmaker's intended subtext.

But what's happening right there on the surface? What's the story *above* the subtext?

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

I mean, you comb your hair or wear a suit and tie, you're "fascist." Going to war with a planet of bugs? Definitely "fascist."

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@zetzugami @Michaelgrosber2 @Simberg_Space @peterrhague You wear a suit and cut your hair you're fasco. Military is DEFINITELY fasco.

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@DiscussingFilm The people who haven't watched the show in twenty years won't like this!

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@CathodeCoaster @SemperAtomos They absolutely cannot, true, and the BDSM feel is blatantly obvious. At the same time, the text of the story focuses on heterosexual characters, and the Hellish consequences of their affair.

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@TheCinesthetic When you love someone, you've gotta trust them. There's no other way. You've got to give them the key to everything that's yours. Otherwise, what's the point? And for a while, I believed, that's the kind of love I had.

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@shadowdramon01 @TheCinesthetic This was a cover.

[Whit Stillman @WhitStillman]

@xbhaskarx @s_decatur Yes, hope to do so.

[Jake @s_decatur]

*delivers three iconic 1990s performances*
*drops off the face of the Earth*

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@TheCinesthetic "I am alone."

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@s_decatur Mr. Jealousy is also a banger. Before his term as grounded Wes Anderson and millennial Woody Allen, Noah Baumbach had a Whit Stillman phase, and recruited Eigeman for one of the 90s most underrated rom coms.

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@s_decatur "What do you call what's ABOVE the subtext?"

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@Warlizard @s_decatur "Oh, I was reducing everything to ant size. An ant White House, an ant Congress..."

[Brian Carmody @BrianCarmoftr9]

@Kalshi_Film Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Fall are also up there
