Investing in Early Childhood Development (ECD) is investing in the future. The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) is committed to strengthening ECD infrastructure in South Africa, ensuring young learners have access to safe, well-equipped spaces for early learning.
On 11 March 2025, DBSA, in partnership with the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) and a private donor, launched the Gxwaleni ECD Centre in the Eastern Cape, delivering a safe and well-equipped learning space for 58 young children. This initiative has replaced inadequate infrastructure, where children were first housed in a corrugated structure before sharing a classroom with Grade R learners due to space constraints.
The new centre now provides access to running water, dedicated toilet facilities, educational resources, and an outdoor playground. Beyond infrastructure, the project prioritises community involvement, working closely with parents, the school governing body, and emerging black-owned businesses to ensure long-term impact.
This initiative aligns with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s commitment to expanding quality ECD access, and the DBSA remains steadfast in supporting this vision through strategic partnerships and targeted investments.

@collenmashawane I know a lot of families who have children with disabilities in Kwanzimakwe KZN - the non profit https://t.co/Pzg3tMkpe0 is working with them and they desperately need better housing
Godongwana:To remedy this, an additional R10 billion over the medium term is allocated to increase the subsidy to R24 per day per child. The extra funding will also support increased access to ECD for approximately 700 000 more children, up to the age of four years old.

We welcome President Ramaphosa’s statement on early childhood development, which demonstrates that South Africa has started prioritising its youngest citizens. We continue to call on governments across the region to #ActForEarlyYears. This will also be our focus at the G20.

Afghan girls have now lost 1,000 days of education that they can never retrieve or bring back. It’s time the whole world united to demand that the Taliban deliver every girl's basic human right. #AfghanGirlsVoices
Despite 1000 unacceptable, almost unthinkable, days of girls secondary edu ban in #Afghanistan, millions of Afghan girls refuse to surrender their dreams. We must be equally relentless in our resolve to stand with them @EduCannotWait#AfghanGirlsVoices👉https://t.co/G8NfIMOlIm
