Commissioner of Police, Dr. Kevin Blake, is inviting diaspora support for targeted interventions at the community level as part of crimefighting measures.
“The best way to help the police is to help the communities that we police. If the community infrastructure [is there] then it makes our job that much easier,” he said.
Dr. Blake was participating in a Riverside Chat on Monday (June 17) as part of the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James.
“We, the police, are competing with gangs for the hearts and minds of our children and we need them to be in places where they are secure,” he argued.
Dr. Blake cited Project STAR (Social Transformation and Renewal), as one area where overseas Jamaicans can contribute.
The programme facilitates one-on-one engagement with community members to create targeted support.

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill, says Jamaica is one of the most attractive investment destinations in the Caribbean and is urging more diaspora members to do business in the country.
Senator Hill addressed a panel discussion on Monday (June 17) on the topic ‘Jamaica Open for Business: Transforming Investment and Enterprise in Jamaica through Diaspora Engagement’ at the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference.
He cited the stability of the local currency as a key reason to invest in the island.
“There is no foreign exchange control in Jamaica. Clean money comes in and clean money goes out,” he noted.
The fact that the Government has been able to undertake infrastructure development and deliver critical services, particularly during the pandemic, without raising taxes, speaks to the strength of the economy, he said.
