@HollyCschool I agree that live music is much different than the recordings of songs due to auto-tune and other more modern music features, however, I do think that there is value to hearing those songs performed live for a sense of authenticity and something a bit different! #W23POPMUS
@Rpomeroy13 I completely agree that while live music may be more enjoyable for most, it is much less accessible than recordings are. Mostly everyone can access any music they want to listen to immediately, and can even listen to recordings of live music if they prefer live covers.
#W23POPMUS Most people would prefer to listen to whatever is the most accessible. Today, live performances are becoming less affordable for a general audience, but recordings are available at our fingertips. Though live music may be more enjoyable for some, it is less accessible.
@mckenziecaul I think that the target audience of teens would play a role in whether or not credit was given because of the maturity of the audience - teens just want to hear what is popular! I also agree that this art form should still be valued as long as cultural theft is also acknowledged.
@ceparsons01 I agree that covering songs and building off of other artists' ideas is a great way for music to reach wider audiences as long as the proper credit is given and artists are respecting the culture behind the music they are covering.
#W23POPMUS This music is considered "shlock" because it was stolen music, and the white, teen pop stars were made famous because of their looks rather than their talent. While shlock music was more popular, credit was not given to the artists, which reinforced racial inequality.
@adentremont31#W23POPMUS I agree that the voice breaks make Ray Charles' voice very recognizable. I also got the impression that his music and lyrics were very genuine because of the passion in his voice and the use of a breaking voice!
@HollyCschool#W23POPMUS I completely agree that this makes me more invested in the song as well! I always tend to appreciate music more when I can tell that the artist is very passionate about what they're performing.
#W23POPMUS Ray Charles and other R&B artists use a "breaking voice" to show passion and emotion when singing. To me, when Ray Charles uses a breaking voice in "I've Got A Woman", it sounds more carefree and shows his passion for the music he is performing.
@marilyn_brandy I agree that streaming services have really diversified my music taste. Not only is any and all music available to me, but streaming services like Spotify and Apple music also curate playlists based on your likes, which allows me to find new music without needing to look for it!
@awarfordmun I completely agree, and I also think it is interesting that the different series of AirPods also affect status (ie the original AirPods vs the new AirPods Max). The need for the best and newest pair of headphones makes music more inaccessible to many people.
Bluetooth headphones are now a symbol of social status and class. The price of brand name headphones (Beats, AirPods) increases with each new model, and owning the newest/most expensive headphones correlates with popularity. Better headphones = higher social status. #W23POPMUS
The popular music industry emphasizes the "false need" to fit in with the crowd, which is why many people have the same taste in music/only listen to what's trending, and why pop artists create music that sounds similar to others so they'll become more popular. #S22POPMUS
@bradleyhodder_ I completely agree that there is a false need for big fan bases, and with social media being so prevalent in the pop music industry, the need for more fans has been increased. I've also seen artists sample songs and not give credit to the artist, and fans don't notice. #S22POPMUS
@awarfordmun I think that popular music from past decades is still quite popular and has stood the test of time, but I do agree with you that this isn't always the case. Today's pop music seems to be popular for a shorter time, and more commercially produced for social media. #S22POPMUS
