@bradleyhodder_ Wald states that the cover band would be live. Would you still rather listen to a recording over going to a live concert even if it is a cover? I think the experience of going to a concert makes you connect with the music more as there is a visual aspect. #W23POPMUS
@jeffreyahodder I think there are some very talented cover artists out there. If I had to listen on the radio I would choose the original but if I had the option to go to a live concert over sit in my room with headphones, I'd go to the concert every time. #W23POPMUS
I disagree with Wald's statement. Many young people enjoy going to live performances even if it is a cover band. Hearing actual singing versus the auto-tuned original in my opinion is much more immersive and a better experience. #w23POPMUS
@Juliewilliams0 I agree that credit always needs to be given. Without proper credit I would consider this music cultural theft however, if credit is given I think in some ways it honours the original song since they liked it enough to want to make their own version #W23POPMUS
@mckenziecaul Great point about how "schlock" should still be respected since it is still an art form. I think transforming the original song can introduce people to new genres that they may have never liked had it not been the "schlock" version first. #W23POPMUS
I think "schlock" when not given proper respect to the original artist and song is considered cultural theft. However, if the right credits are given then I think it can be a great way for a wider audience to interact with a certain song as it appeals to more people #w23POPMUS
@mckenziecaul The tone and style of song can definitely change how lyrics are interpreted and I agree that the way Ray Charles uses his breaking voice in his song highlights those lyrics in a unique and passionate way #W23POPMUS
@KyleMusseau I definitely agree that since Ray Charles has such a distinguished voice you can easily identify a song as his just from hearing a snippet! #W23POPMUS
I think Ray Charles used a breaking voice to show passion and meaning. Often times when singers do this it amplifies the message they're trying to send. #W23POPMUS
Bluetooth headsets have recently shot to popularity as a trendy item especially since Apple dropped the new "airpod pro maxes". People who have these are currently being seen as trendy and wealthy since the head sets are extremely expensive, around $800 for a pair. #w23popmus
@adentremont31 Since getting spotify I was opened up to whole new music genres I would probably have never experienced if it hadn't been for streaming services. I do agree that they can seem a bit "posh" especially the paid ones but there are often free versions accessible to anyone #W23POPMUS
@OliviaHarrhy I completely agree Olivia. When I was a kid I never had much technology (including an MP3 player) and always felt left out. I think as technology becomes more expensive it further separates social classes #W23POPMUS
@BrookeSlous I agree with what you said about how popular music influences people to fit in. Lots of artists promote the same thing and next thing you know everyone is doing that same thing they were promoting. #S22POPMUS
@marilyn_brandy I don't believe that pop music is dumbed-down music, it is a different genre of music that is played most often on the radio and so passively we listen to it. But many pop songs have meaningful lyrics. #S22POPMUS
#S22POPMUS Some false needs created by the pop music industry include fame, wealth and over consumption. Pop music doesn't appeal to a strictly passive audience. In my opinion many popular songs cover complex subject matter that haven't been touched on in the past.
