I never saw "Oppenheimer" and will never see Nolan's "Odyssey".

Nolan, a staunch materialist, doesn't understand myth or the interplay of the spirit world with the material. That's why even in his better films, something feels slightly off or missing.

He can only perceive what he permits himself to believe exists. Thus the shallowness of his characters. Even Cobb from Inception, brilliantly played by Leonardo DiCaprio, arguably one of his better films, comes away feeling insubstantial.

I see signs and symbols everywhere. Spirits infuse everything. I am not inventing them, I am not imagining them or anticipating them before I discern their presence. I acknowledge that they ARE, and thus they reveal themselves to me.

The spirits are different here, in rural Australia. They feel older and more indifferent to human presence than in the Americas. But they're here.

Nolan can't allow for the possibility of something more than what science acknowledges, and in a way I think this is why he cannot understand ancient Greece or the 20th century United States, which was a place roiling with spiritual energies, disturbed as they were by world wars and development of nuclear weapons.

Men of that time; Oppenheimer, Teller, Groves, Nixon, JFK, LBJ, were Titans because they were riding a tide of immense spiritual and material tumult, and it just wasn't possible for someone with Nolan's limited vision to respectfully portray.

So too with the Bronze Age conflict we call the Trojan War, which we've long known to have been much more than legend.
