Wrapped up three days of work on a scientific drilling proposal for the Gulf of Mexico:

(A lot of geophysics, so I was useless, but I tried…)
Got some extra time; if you have Mexico City recommendations, let me know
Abstracts due August 2
Full title: Africa's Climate and Ecosystem History: Approaches Using Proxy and Modeling Analysis Frameworks
Session ID: 187164
Session #: PP008
Apply at: https://t.co/bSnUgSlWff
Are you an experimentalist or modeler submitting an abstract to #AGU23 on African paleoclimate / -ecology on any timescale? Consider PP008, organized by Andrea Mason, @dgebregiorgis, @ajtclimate, @TKamulali, and @bryceotopes, a bunch of @AGU_PaleoECRs. Questions? Ask any of us!
I arrived late and we finished early, which means I contributed very little 😅… but that means our #Exp397 sampling party at @marum_de went very well! @JRSO_IODP
Me with a million years of samples spanning the Messinian Salinity Crisis:
📢Our new paper “North Atlantic cooling triggered a zonal mode over the Indian Ocean during Heinrich Stadial 1” is out today in @ScienceAdvances! https://t.co/KLnS5ekRhL
Hope it can provided a new understanding of how Atlantic Ocean circulation can impact Indian Ocean climate!🧵
Obliquity who? All precession, all the time, baby – come see our new North African Plio-Pleistocene (3.3-2.5 Ma) leaf wax dD record from @JRSO_IODP (ODP) Site 659 at #AGU22 on Thursday morning, PP42D-1139 #IODPatAGU22
@JRSO_IODP#Exp397 is over! Despite what it looks like, already missing @TheJR but can't wait to start playing with our >6 km (!) / >15 million years of core
Time for #AGU22! @RiceEarthSci Climate & Water Lab presentations coming up TODAY: @MarshallClimate at 2:45 "PP15F-0714: GDGTs in the machine: Comparing Proxy Records of African Temperature Change to Holocene Climate Model Simulations via Proxy System Modeling" 🎉
Couldn't have done this without discussions, guidance, and samples from my coauthors!
...of whom I think @earthXman--who really got the ball rolling--is the only other one with a Twitter
Dissolution of planktic forams getting you down? Have I got the proxy for you! *slaps top of GC-IRMS*
Our paper on alkenone-specific (C37:3, C37:2, C38:2 Me) hydrogen isotopes is out in @GCA_Journal. Happy to answer questions or share the pdf
https://t.co/lXleNbH6xv
2) Absolutely no inter-alkenone (C37:3-C37:2) isotopic fractionation observed. Feel free to measure in bulk!
3) Alkenone-seawater isotopic fractionation appears independent of temperature and salinity. Jury's still out on E. hux vs. G. oceanica.
Left Lisbon today (slept through departure, wrong shift...) on @TheJR (@JRSO_IODP) for #Exp397, Iberian Margin Paleoclimate; 2 months at sea, >7,000 m of core, and up to 7 million years of Atlantic circulation and terrestrial environmental change.
Hell yeah.
Any age (elementary-college) is ok; also museums, clubs, etc. Any language is ok too as long as someone on board speaks it, but the odds are good that we do.
The expedition website^ is pretty technical, I'd be happy to pass along a more plain-language description of the cruise.
Science educator friends (of friends) – I'm sailing on IODP Expedition 397 (https://t.co/6ikxeGnQgd) Oct 11-Dec 11. We'd love to arrange ship-to-shore broadcasts of life / work on @TheJR (https://t.co/4a1yNbEHdl), so reach out if you have a class that'd be interested!
Experimentalists, modelers, everyone in between: submit an abstract to “Water Isotope Systematics: Improving Modern and Paleoclimate Interpretations” at #AGU22 convened by @DrSpeedyDee, @Chijun_Sun, @slgstevenson, and me. If you're wondering if your work fits – ask!
