What would you add next — network speed, battery status, running processes, or temperature?
Union Pacific announces the arrival of two battery-electric locomotives in Southern California, part of the company’s ongoing investments in testing next-generation technologies in real-world operating environments. The locomotives are the first of four FLXdrive battery-electric units built by @WabtecCorp and ordered by Union Pacific.
The FLXdrive will undergo extensive testing in a variety of railroad operations, including switching and providing local customer service. Operating in a busy rail yard will provide Union Pacific with valuable data on their performance, reliability and operational capabilities. https://t.co/1kcuaCeTgx
Brilliant and important research by this team (supported by NIH)
—> The research also has implications for investigating treatments for SMA, ALS and other conditions affecting the brain stem. Until now, studying these diseases has been nearly impossible…

This is a special graph we only post periodically. It shows 2 things that have considerable implications.
1) Transmission has been lower than anticipated since December, and *only* since December. It's a recent phenomenon, not a long-term trend. WastewaterSCAN has poor longitudinal standardization so sometimes people mistakenly believe waves are getting smaller and smaller (or they say this because their listserv subscribers like to hear it). CDC and Biobot make very long-term data difficult to find. On the PMC 13-wave graph (which integrates long-term CDC and Biobot data, some of which is measured weekly by hand!), wave height gets smaller, but the waves are wider (hard to perceive visually). The take-home is we're in a very weird place in the pandemic, not a trend, but either an aberration or shift.
2) Cumulative levels for the current year (Y7) closely resemble that of Year 2. This is where the debate of aberration vs shift gets interesting. If we are in an aberration of lower than typical transmission, that means many people are walking around with limited short-term infection-derived immunity, and most people are not recently boosted. That would be a tinder box for a saltation variant (MANY variants are circulating), and put us on that scary Y2 path. The alternative is that this is not an aberration but a more meaningful shift, some population-level immunity building through a combination of boosters, infection history, and the most vulnerable dying (social murder), meaning time between infection starting to increase. These divergent hypotheses are the difference between 150 million vs 325 million infections for Y7. If I were a gambler, I'd bet about 200 million. However, you can see the uncertainty. This is a time like no other to monitor the data closely.
The good news is that wastewater monitoring is not going away. PMC will keep posting. Retired NASA scientist, Dr. Eastman at WHN (@jlerollblues), is close to having localized *forecasts* too. On Instagram, a new entrant is integrating different data sources with other methodologies. @CyFi10, @amethystarlight, and @CovidDataReport post nuanced updates frequently.
My advice would be to talk to the people who will listen and remember that much more important than understanding the risk is knowing you can do something about it. Boosting is the easiest intervention. If someone will mask, teach them how to properly fit their nose wire and do a seal check, get them to upgrade from a KN95 with cheek and chin gaps to an N95 like 3M Aura or 3M VFlex in the riskiest or socially easiest contexts. Easier said than done, but if that pessimistic scenario plays out, they may be ready to listen.
Covid going up in Texas, I’m hearing about colleagues and friends getting infected. The new annual Covid vaccine is available, got mine two weeks ago, now’s the time…

📚 I'm stoked to share this!
It was a labor of love ❤️. What began as a resource requested by my students has grown into a comprehensive glossary of data analytics and geostatistics, with every term cross-referenced to my free e-book, complete with theory, interactive demonstrations, Python code, and links to my YouTube lectures.
I'm thrilled that it's become a strong learning resource for students, practitioners, and educators alike. 🚀
Check it out and let me know what you think! 👇

I refuse!
I will not teach #MachineLearning without first covering frequentist and Bayesian #Probability!
Today in my machine learning class, we covered probability. During our discussion of Bayesian probability, we worked through the Sivia Bayesian coin demo. Then I opened my interactive @matplotlib #Python dashboard and formulated our prior and likelihood directly in the computer!
Probability first. Machine learning second. 😉

Bob Uecker once went to the mound to talk to Bob Gibson, and Gibson barked:
"What are you doing out here?"
Bob Uecker replied:
"Oh, nothing.
Just going out to talk to Curt Flood in center.:
The 1964 Champion St. Louis Cardinals team photo had to be retaken because in the first attempt, one black player, Gibson and one white player, Uecker held hands with big goofy smiles.
Both players were fined by the Cardinals.

Our kids will never forgive us for the ways we are breaking that scientific enterprise now for short term political gain
Covid wastewater numbers starting to go up here in Texas. My understanding is that the next annual Covid mRNA vaccine out starting in September. The new one targets XFG within the JN.1 lineage. Current one targets LP.8.1.
XFG is a recombination from LP.8.1 so they are related but also significantly different. We’re in this transition period that seems to happen in August whether to get a booster now or wait for the availability of the new one? Some clarity about its release in early vs late September might help
I'm sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had a an impact on me. She definitely didn't have to take the time to do it. Even for a kid who mostly listened to rap music, she was an icon. A superstar in every sense. Rest easy Dolly. And thank you for the kind words.
