When Ami Prevec was hired on to run breakfast service at Blanchet House saving lives with Narcan wasn’t in the job description, but it is now. At 5:45 a.m. today, a man pounded on the window asking for Narcan for a stranger. Ami gave him two doses and followed behind with an extra dose because she now knows how strong the new street drugs are. Ami came upon a woman laying unconscious in a doorway with a friend over her trying to revive her. Ami called 911 because after two doses of Narcan the woman still wasn’t breathing. The 911 operator had her administer a third dose. The woman started breathing and ran off before medical attention could reach her. There’s a lot of fear of authorities amongst people struggling with addiction. “It’s really sad and shocking,” says Ami. “But it’s good to know that people are looking out for each other.” Thank you, Ami.
Tiffany with Multnomah County Health Department is handing out more than 200 doses of Narcan during Blanchet House’s lunch service. Our guests are very grateful to have this live-saving treatment on hand. Many street drugs now contain large amounts of synthetic fentanyl which is causing overdoses and deaths. Last week, three people died in one day with more than 11 overdosing in a small area of downtown Portland. And those are only the reported overdoses. Life is not disposable to us and we must give people a chance to better their lives.
We caught Jenn heading out in the rain to help a man shivering under a blanket on the sidewalk who had his wheelchair stolen last night. He has no legs. Jenn got an ambulance for him. Thank you to the EMTs for their care. At the same time, Jenn was helping someone get into our transitional housing after being eaten alive by bed bugs at a shelter. And then a person collapsed in front of her. She wasn’t sure if they were overdosing or not. She got them food and they revived and walked off. A busy lunch hour at Blanchet House.
