Bandit terrorists have extorted over ₦500 million in Zamfara State alone since January 2025. Yes, you read that right—Five Hundred Million Naira. This is according to a report published today by Daily Trust.
The paper interviewed multiple residents who detailed how dozens of villages across several LGAs were forced to pay large sums simply to remain in their communities or access their farms. In some cases, entire villages were charged “compensation” for military attacks on bandit hideouts.
In many parts of rural Northwestern Nigeria, abduction and extortion have been effectively decriminalised. For poor Nigerians, the only options are to pay or be killed—because there is no one to protect them.
That such brazen impunity can occur in a country with a military, police force, and intelligence agencies is both tragic and unfathomable. Terrorism will not end in Nigeria until the government makes it economically unviable and ensures that terrorists are held accountable.
As things stand, not only are criminals and terrorists rarely punished—abduction has become the most lucrative industry in Nigeria, second only to corruption in public office.
The Federal Government must urgently launch a coordinated national response that combines military force, robust intelligence operations, community protection initiatives, and the dismantling of financial networks that enable terrorists to profit from violence.
Anything less will continue to cost innocent lives and embolden the criminals who now operate with near-total impunity.
Almost a decade ago, Boko Haram’s abduction of over 100 schoolgirls brought Dapchi, Yobe State into the global spotlight. Now, Yobe women are leading grassroots efforts to combat extremism and promote peace, transforming from victims to protectors.
