The woman’s bait - Part 52 // Marital Drama
“Perception is reality; what people see and hear is more accurate than what’s in someone’s head. In marriage, people offend each other with their actions and defend themselves with their intentions. It doesn’t matter what you intended; what matters is how your action was perceived.” — The Woman’s Bait - Part 10.
Yesterday, my wife and I sat across from one another in silence. She was hurt, and tears could be seen around her eyes. I was also angered, and I took a short walk to cool my head. My wife said something, and I responded. My response hurt her, and I got angered by her reaction. Drama is complicated; if you have doubts, try figuring out the drama between Israel and Palestine.
Nonetheless, for the purposes of the story, I will focus on the part where I hurt my wife because it happened first. It’s said that hurt people hurt people. Therefore, we shall excuse my wife, who hurt me in reaction. I wanted to get to the bottom of the matter and asked my wife to join me in breaking down the scenario.
It’s said there’s a difference between hearing and listening. It was evident yesterday. My wife was talking; I was hearing her, but I didn’t listen to what she was saying. Repeatedly, she said, “Felix, there’s nothing wrong with what you said. The issue was how you said it.”
I explained that she was being unserious about focusing on the how instead of the what. I had written before in my story that people hurt each other with their actions and defend each other with their intentions, and here I was doing precisely that. How could I be blind and selfish? Weren’t the tears in my wife’s eyes sufficient to signal that truly she had been hurt? Did I marry an unintelligent woman whose words couldn’t be trusted? If not, why didn't I consider her pain?
Repeatedly, I rebuke the woman when she does a good thing and perceive the ‘how’ to be disrespectful. Now, all of a sudden, the ‘how’ that matters to me wasn’t mattering to her. Where is the justice in that? Or better yet, where’s the love in that? Didn’t Apostle Paul give me a singular instruction to love my wife? Where’s the love when someone hurts due to my actions, and I'm too blind to notice.
My dearest wife, forgive me for my behavior. I’ve judged you on a standard I have failed to maintain. I should have apologized the moment you said I had hurt you. That can’t be too much to ask. I’m genuinely sorry. Yours truly, beloved.
