Democratic Senator @RussetPerry, who has called for a special session to give the SCC more time to review the proposed Dominion/NextEra merger, is responding to @GovernorVA after Spanberger announced she will intervene in the case.
Perry said, "Intervention and extending the review are not mutually exclusive."
Perry added, "I've heard the suggestion that the Governor hasn't called a special session because the votes may not be there in the General Assembly. I don't know if that's true, but she should call us back anyway. Make us do our job. The people of Virginia deserve to know where their elected representatives stand on a merger that could create the largest electric utility in the world. Across the Commonwealth—and frankly, across the country—people are asking their leaders to step up and act in the best interests of everyday families. This is one of those moments."

In the wake of South Carolina setting a deadline for the NextEra-Dominion review yesterday, I am renewing my call for a special session to extend Virginia's review process of that same merger. Without an extension, the SCC should deny the merger. My statement:
Scrutiny is welcome. But intervention alone doesn’t fix the underlying problem: VA is reviewing the largest utility merger in HISTORY on an inadequate timeline w/out critical laws & protections in place.
We can ask more questions AND extend the timeline.

Thank you @SpanbergerForVA for standing up for Virginians! This merger could bring higher bills and threaten our clean energy future. The SCC must put families, workers, and our clean energy progress ahead of corporate profits. https://t.co/ORNzwJzZaO

For months, I’ve listened to Virginians from every corner of the Commonwealth. Different backgrounds. Different perspectives. Their message is clear. The status quo cannot continue.
Data centers in Virginia, not residential customers, should pay the costs of new transmission lines and substations their developments require.
My Administration is urging the State Corporation Commission to take this commonsense step to protect families from increased costs, improve accountability, and set up a more affordable and reliable energy system.

“I never heard any citizen saying, ‘I really want you to put an electric consumption tax on them…I heard them say, ‘I want you to deal with the impacts of these facilities,’ and that’s largely where we fell short.”

On Friday, I joined Nick Minock with @7NewsDC to discuss why Virginians deserve answers before this proposal acquisition, valued at over $64 billion, moves forward and why protecting ratepayers, workers, and the public interest must come first.
As MD experiences extreme heat, families are dealing with higher energy bills while the electric grid faces record demand. EmPOWER helps tackle both challenges by reducing energy use, lowering utility bills, and easing pressure on the grid. Read more: https://t.co/g3VRZ0PA5A
