Many of you will go to Seattle's Chinatown International District and notice the colorful new lanterns hanging over Hing Hay Park.
Thursday evening, Mayor Bruce Harrell and other community leaders celebrated this latest phase of the city's "Downtown Activation Plan."
But go up a few blocks to Little Saigon, and it's impossible to ignore the open air drug use, black market of stolen goods, and tent encampments scattered everywhere.
After covering this beat now for nearly four years, there is no doubt the source of all this chaos is the DESC Navigation Center. The "low barrier" homeless shelter continues to be a magnet for crime and illicit activity in this predominantly Asian American community. Addicts are given free drug supplies and treatment is not required to get a bed.
The 911 calls here are off the charts and the side streets are littered with trash, needles, and fentanyl foil.
Former Mayor Jenny Durkan rubber stamped this failed experiment several years ago and allowed it to come in. Now I'm being told the shelter contract is up for renewal this year.
No doubt this city needs better shelters and affordable housing, but elected officials need to read between the lines. Whenever a "low barrier" model goes into a neighborhood, the results are usually disastrous. Just ask all the mom and pop businesses that have exited the CID.
If the Mayor and new city council really want to bring change and save the neighborhood, it's time to remove the DESC Navigation Center. At the very least, put in higher standards and requirements like Union Gospel Mission in Pioneer Square. You rarely see open air drug dens and tent encampments outside that shelter. Come down and see for yourself.
BTW, CM Tammy Morales(@CMTammyMorales) did not show up to the lantern ceremony in her own district. Her constituents were reminded once again, they are on their own.
