Agreed! Hedican (2012) states that government officials should be more active in settling land claims in order to prevent them from becoming violent (as this protest did). So, this situation could have possibly been avoided if the officials addressed the issue sooner. #PLST4000
An ongoing protest in Canada currently is the controversy facing the trans mountain pipeline. Not only is it causing a political uproar, but it also brings racial and cultural controversy to the public eye which Canadian officers need to protect

Trudeau plans to peacefully resolve protests of the natural gas pipeline by negotiating & communicating with members of the Wet’suwet’en community. This approach depicts Hedican’s (2012) advice for police & government organizations when settling conflicts in society. #PLST4000
@AbbyManning272 These laws & police roles make sex workers more susceptible to violence from not adequately screening clients. This also demonstrates Armstrong's (2017) findings that sex workers have limited human rights & less trust in the police when sex work is criminalized. #PLST4000
Canadian sex work laws make workers invisible as they are forced indoors, vulnerable & less likely to report violence to the police. As Armstrong's (2017) research found, sex workers have more trust in police & are afforded human rights when sex work is decriminalized. #PLST4000
@MUNTab136@AbbyManning272 Agreed! Police should employ more proactive measures in these cases. Although Bacon (2016) states that the police have not yet implemented practices that reduce all of the harm caused by the drug market and drug control, I think these practices would be effective. #PLST4000
Four men were arrested after an RCMP NL Federal Serious and Organized Crime Unit investigation into inter-provincial drug trafficking and proceeds of crime from BC to NL. Project Blowfish shows the police's use of harm reduction strategies to increase public safety. #PLST4000
@AbbyManning272 Since business owners rarely report incidents of cybercrime to the police, the police will likely have little control in these situations. Police are unlikely to investigate or enforce laws relating to these crimes if they are uninformed of their occurrence in society. #PLST4000
The RNCs' safe online purchasing zone demonstrates a modern policing practice that deters cybercrime & further criminal activity that may arise in 'cyber-neighbourhoods' like social media networks by promoting police surveillance & public safety (Williams et al., 2013). #PLST4000
A designated safe zone at @RNC_PoliceNL headquarters in St. John's for completing online purchases in-person has proven to be a useful addition thus far. @Andrewlwaterman reports. https://t.co/E6nFVNcMUK
Social control theory states youth in gangs lack controls in their life that deter criminality. Policy deliberates youth as adults but fails to address social factors underlying gang involvement. More available community resources could prevent youth from joining gangs. #SOCI2300
These kids'll be charged as adults receiving 4-life in prison. They say it's gangs, youth don't join gangs if they had other ways to gain social bonds to their community and others.Required after-school or community activities for school may help #SOCI2300 https://t.co/4K5C1yiUOP
@eozon246 Agreed! Social control theory claims that people join gangs because they lack controls (i.e. family, school, activities) in their life that deter criminality. Increasing police and community resources could prevent people from joining gangs and help others leave them. #SOCI2300
Marxism considers crime as a result of
power imbalances & unequal social institutions. Police are social elites & therefore retain the majority of power in society. Policy prohibits police corruption, interfering with the administration of justice & breaking the law. #SOCI2300
Focus groups may explain why the downtown area of St. John's witnesses more crimes than other areas of NL. Distributing self-report surveys to inhabitants of NL could answer your research question as people could anonymously offer their opinions on the matter. #SOCI2300
@cpack18 I think this would be effective. Surveys would be administered to inmates to discover their opinion on the matter. However, surveys may be more successful than interviews as the surveys are anonymous, thus, there is no chance for repercussions from correctional staff. #SOCI2300
@GouldingAlexis I believe that employing a mixed research method to answer your question would be beneficial. Self-report surveys and qualitative interviews could reveal what a randomly chosen sample of the Canadian population thinks may deter crime rates from rising. #SOCI2300
Why do sexual assault offenders get lower sentences than other crimes in NL? I would use a mixed research method consisting of self-report surveys and interviews with a random sample of the NL population to determine their opinion on the sentencing process of the CJS. #SOCI2300
Shallow analysis-fails to analyze details of each case & circumstances of the offenders. Also, the suggestion is that longer jail sentences will help. Wrong. "Something's wrong with our sentencing system, and these 2 cases prove it." #criminaljustice

@KrulSchylar It is not equal if the opportunities available for women is constructed on the gender-biased power relations in a patriarchal society. Women compose the majority of the labour force in NL as you state, yet they are paid much less than men who perform the same labour. #SOCI2300
@FudgeShelby Condemning women's clothing as an invitation for victimization through sexual assault reinforces the male-dominant power dynamics in society. It also socially silences women about their experiences of victimization by men (Comack, 2015).
This news article emphasizes several issues of male violence against women. Feminist criminology maintains that this crime depicts the concept of "hegemonic masculinity" which encourages the "social silencing" of women who have been victimized by men (Comack, 2015). #SOCI2300
@KatieMUN12@ZacharyNash7 Completely agree! I think listening to live concerts and listening to recorded music is two completely different experiences. It's definitely the atmosphere that makes both experiences so different from one another! #MUS2011
I agree with Wald's statement. I enjoy listening to live music. I attend live concerts even if I am unfamiliar with the artists - I love them after hearing them live. I enjoy the Beatle's cover band show's downtown, they may not be the Beatles but they are still good. #MUS2011
@ZacharyNash7 Many people use live concerts as an excuse to go out - not everyone. As a person who doesn't drink/go out but sees lots of live concerts of cover and original bands, I appreciate music more when hearing it live. I'll always prefer live music over recorded music. #MUS2011
