The Trump IVF policy is perhaps the least bad that we could have hoped for. As I understand it, there’s no IVF mandate and no government subsidies. So there are no direct religious liberty or conscience violations or concerns with taxpayer funding. But least bad is still… bad. The entire thrust is to make something unethical more widely practiced. Such a policy is itself unethical. IVF as practiced today entails massive killing and/or freezing of embryonic human beings. IVF doesn’t treat underlying causes of infertility and doesn’t respect the dignity of the human person in his or her creation, where people should be begotten not made. I appreciate that the President’s team engaged widely throughout this policy process and heard the concerns expressed by EPPC and many others. More work to be done.

IVF is deeply troubling technology for most conservative Christian’s. It seeks to address the sad and difficult reality of infertility but in doing so disregards the sanctify of life by creating more embryos than can be implanted and thus results in the destruction of human life.
