Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record has stood since 1984, more than 41 years. Adrian Peterson came closer than anyone in his 2012 MVP season, rushing for 2,097 yards less than a year after tearing his ACL and MCL.

He rushed for 199 yards in the regular season finale against the Packers, helping the Vikings clinch a playoff berth, but finished just 9 yards short of breaking the record. Both Dickerson and Peterson achieved their totals in 16 game seasons.
