Early Christian’s were not wrong about the coming kingdom.
Jesus’ predictions of imminent judgment (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21) were fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 AD. That was the end of the old covenant age exactly as He described. That was the “coming” in judgment upon that generation.
The full return of Jesus and final consummation of the kingdom remain future. Early Christians held both: the imminent judgment on the old system (which happened) and the future hope. They were right on the first. The New Testament never claimed the physical Second Coming would occur within decades.
Christianity didn’t fail or have to reinvent itself. It correctly transitioned from the fulfilled old covenant to the established New Covenant. The kingdom advanced right on schedule.

As far as history is concerned Deut 27 is the oldest answer to your question as it pertains to the Israelites.
But my stance is that jews are not and cannot claim Israelite identity as the Torah demands.

The destruction of the Temple did wipe out the functioning Israelite covenant identity as defined by the Torah; no more central sanctuary, no more sacrifices, no more valid priesthood, no more tribal land allotments, no more national liturgical system. That was the heart of pre-70 AD Israelite existence. Calling that “not factual” ignores both the Torah and history.
For Christians, it was relevant: Jesus fulfilled that system, rendering the Temple and its sacrifices obsolete (Hebrews 8:13). Early Christians were not “wrong” about an imminent end — the end of the old covenant order came exactly as Jesus predicted in that generation (Matthew 24). The kingdom of heaven arrived through the New Covenant, not by preserving the old shadow.
Christianity didn’t “have to change and adapt” because of failure. It correctly recognized the transition from the old fulfilled system to the New. The Temple’s destruction confirmed it.
The Israelite world ended. The New Covenant continued. That was the point. Cope

Yes the Temple was unnecessary to Christians.
But it was the heart and foundation of the Israelites.

Atonement, Passover, Yom Kippur, the daily Tamid sacrifices, the priesthood, and the entire national liturgical calendar were impossible. The land, the people, and the covenant itself were structured around the Temple as the visible dwelling place of YHWH among Israel. It was the literal and spiritual center of Israelite identity.

Josephus (Peri tou Ioudaikou Polemou 1.1.4 and 6.5.1, eyewitness):
"The loss of the Temple was the greatest and most lamentable calamity that ever befell the Ioudaioi... No one can adequately describe the horror and misery of that day."

😂omg The New Testament’s “imminent” language refers to the judgment coming upon the old covenant/Temple system (which did happen in 70 AD), not the literal end of the physical world or the Second Coming in the apostles’ lifetimes dingus.
Paul’s advice on marriage in situational wisdom during persecution and “the present distress” not a failed apocalyptic prediction.
Christianity didn’t morph from a “wrong” apocalyptic Jewish sect it correctly recognized the fulfillment and obsolescence of the old order.

Think you got it backwards
The Torah demands verifiable patriarchal/tribal descent as the non negotiable foundation of Israelite identity.
Believing the people now claiming to be Israelites actually are, when they have zero tribal registers, no Temple, no land allotments by tribe, and everything that God gave the Israelites their identity and then wiped from the Earth in 7Oad is a rejection of Christs word, pudding brain logic, showing a mind deceived by Satan.
