@jake_theviking@bigbluntblidi How does that make sense? Colleges have a massive population that attend that school literally in their backyard, plus alumni, plus their families. It’s also in general more affordable to go because they aren’t professionals. It’s easier to attend.
@i12640786@itsetgl@tosinmm_ I’ve enjoyed every match. Curaçao are here because extra CONCACAF teams got in because US, Mexico, Canada received auto bids from hosting.
You wouldn’t complain if Italy, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, and Nigeria were here instead of Curacao, Jordan, Uzbekistan, Tunisia, and Iraq.
@coupedumonde07 Deadass think after this it’s going to explode even more. 1994 out it in the culture… 2026 may make it a main part of it. I’m excited.
In 20-25 years, USMNT I think becomes a legit power on the world stage.
USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving.
Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free.
I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these."
"They just come with the table, man."
They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.
This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat.
I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared.
"Did we…?"
"Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless."
Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined.
My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude."
Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man.
I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy.
Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.
I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most.
Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.
@rmadashing Richards, Freeman, Jedi, Scally, Adams, Mckinne, Tillman, Pulisic, Dest, Weah, Aaronson, Balogun, Pepi, Wright are ballers. Trusty plays for Celtic, Reyna has x-factor abilities. Then a bunch of solid MLS guys. If they had 2-3 top guys (it’s a lot), they’re a legit contender tbh.
@kynky@imkikosuarez You’re right. That’s where a lot of kids figure stuff out.
But we started this conversation with that 1st part- a majority of Americans have not been taught. It has only recently become a real part of our culture.
That’s kind of the point of them spelling it out for new viewers
@kynky@imkikosuarez It just not though, that’s the point. As far as Americans learning the sport- unless you go out of your way, it’s not a thing.
My dad is big into the sport- his school didn’t offer it when it was young. He played football. It’s better now but 50 years ago you couldn’t learn it
@kynky@imkikosuarez Even as an adult- Im 27 and live outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, HUGE city in the U.S. Big soccer area. I have to drive 45+ minutes to play a free pickup game. And even then we are worried about being kicked out from a field. The access here is terrible.
@kynky@imkikosuarez Also, on top of all of that- most fields here are privately owned and you can’t go to a goal. It’s awful. Vs. a basketball court which is typically free at a playground, grass outside with a football. And funny enough you can go to a baseball field easier than a soccer field.
@kynky@imkikosuarez I’m sure most of those people also struggle with the rules.
In the U.S. it’s hard to get into the sport because it’s expensive and tons of travel needed. Access it limited here.
There are just more sports here. Not discrediting those populations, but here are more options.
@kynky@imkikosuarez What in earth is that graphic you’re showing?
Also, yes, it has. I don’t think you understand how large the US is. A lot of people still have never watched the sport. The World Cup is an opportunity to grow the game. That’s why they spelled out a team was down? Who cares?
@_fod0@AFCYop_ He absolutely is. Literally everyone in the sport thinks so. He’s shown it year after year after year. He’s fallen off the past 2 years due to injuries and Arsenal moving to a more defensive mentality.
He’s been England’s best player in every major tournament since last WC.
