Let’s talk about why emergency departments are full.

We’re going to use Mary as an example. Mary is a completely fictional patient.

Let’s say Mary is 72. Her family doctor retired 5 years ago.

She’s in the ED after a fall “weak and dizzy” (we see this a lot.)

I have been a doctor for over 4 years now. Working as a GP registrar is rewarding; my supervisor is amazing, and my colleagues in my practice are fantastic.

However, the complexity of General Practice is immense and I am constantly thinking hard every single second of the working day. My colleagues come in early and leave late daily, and go above and beyond for their patients with smiles on their faces.

Despite that, newspaper articles like this make me wonder why GPs continue when they are demonised no matter how hard they work.

Just watched first two eps of #BREATHTAKING - wow, what astounding television. Jed Mercurio at his dramatic best. Confirms what I felt at the time it was all happening - our NHS staff were heroic, our politicians were clueless.
