Americans identify with their cars so much that I think this is actually true. On an unconscious and spiritual level they do believe they ARE the car. The car is their Avatar and they are Jake Sully
@ettingermentum I think people on this site who like to play cnn clip referee are wildly overstating woke 1.0’s toxic weight. Like to a shocking degree.
I would bet that among other highly educated countries, Americans have the absolute worst ability to describe their own political ideology as a system of beliefs with undergirding principles (rather than just a list of positions they have on various issues)
People whine that they "don't teach civics" in schools, but the problem is that they DO teach "civics" which is a pointless class that just teaches kids to worship the constitution. they never learn about how governments elsewhere or basics of political ideology and philosophy
I had to look up where the germ of this "Castro is a billionaire" idea is from and it appears to be a forbes article from 2006 that said he's worth $900 million because that's the value of nationalized firms he controls lmao
Cruz: Fidel Castro was a billionaire. Putin is a billionaire. The leaders of communist regimes are always rich. They steal and rob from those they govern.
@matthiasellis It isn't automatically conservative just when you wish things could be how they used to. If you're upset about losing the social contract, diplomacy, a rules-based international order and turning to a hierarchy where the only law is the threat of violence... that's liberalism!
@matthiasellis imo there's been a lot of mistaking these ideas as "conservative" simply because he's fretting about the collapse of an old order, ignoring the loss he's lamenting is a LIBERAL one of norms and peace, that is giving way to a conservative principle of might makes right
friend of mine's older brother knew the daniels in college and went in on renting a house with them one year and it ended up being a situation where there were five guys living there who collectively owned six GameCubes. something i think about whenever they're in the news
This note gets it just right. You apologise for eating the plums, express sympathy for their owner and explain your motivation for eating them. Just one note: consider offering to replace the plums. This small gesture could do a lot to smooth things over
At this point this take is exclusively based on some political stuff in TDKR, a movie which came out 14 years ago. Meanwhile it's hard to see his most recent movie as anything than Liberalism with a capital L. It's literally all about The Social Contract!! Liberal to the bone!!
The closest thing to a villain of Oppenheimer, the Salieri who gets righteously owned by his Senate aide, was an actual real-life small-c conservative!
It's really funny mainstream dems immediately pivoted back to this kind of 0 sum identity politics after 1) swearing they wouldn't do it all 2025 after Trump won and 2) Zohran rose to prominence by really focusing of God governance and neutral economic messaging
