The Trump administration just took a sledgehammer to American history — again.

In a move that stunned historians, civil rights leaders, and pretty much anyone who believes slavery and women’s suffrage are worth remembering, the White House abruptly scrapped a set of 2026 commemorative quarters honoring Frederick Douglass, Ruby Bridges, and the women who won the right to vote.

The original designs, developed over years by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, would have featured Frederick Douglass, suffrage activists, and Ruby Bridges — a six-year-old who bravely integrated an all-white school while facing violent mobs. These are American heroes whose courage shaped our nation.

Instead, the U.S. Mint announced 2026's quarters will feature—surprise—early white presidents and founding-era imagery. The Mayflower Compact. The Revolutionary War. The Gettysburg Address. You know, all the safe, sanitized history that lets them pretend America was built solely by white men.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent approved the change. U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach proudly told Fox News the move steers away from "DEI and Critical Race Theory policies"—as if honoring the end of slavery is somehow a partisan political stance rather than basic human decency.

Acting Mint Director Kristie McNally had the audacity to claim the new designs "celebrate America's defining ideals of liberty." Liberty. From an administration scrubbing Black civil rights leaders from our currency. The irony would be funny if it weren't so horrifying.

Here's the kicker: Trump ousted all Commission of Fine Arts members this year—the panel legally required to review coin designs. He fired the watchdogs so he could rewrite history without oversight.

And while they're erasing Frederick Douglass, there's a yet-unapproved proposal circulating for a Trump dollar coin featuring his image from the assassination attempt with the phrase "fight, fight, fight." They're literally replacing Black civil rights heroes with Trump's ego.

Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Kyle Whitmire nailed it: "Some of our country's greatest achievements are not considered achievements by this administration."

That's the truth. To Trump and his MAGA cult, ending slavery isn't an achievement. Women gaining the right to vote isn't worth celebrating. A six-year-old Black girl integrating schools while facing death threats isn't heroic.

But Trump pumping his fist? That's what they want immortalized on our currency.

Public education advocate Lanet Greenhaw warned: "Deplorable! Trump must not be allowed to re-write or cancel history!!" But here's the devastating reality: he already is. And as Professor J. Thibodeaux pointed out, "the American people will simply let this happen."

We cannot let this happen.

This isn't about coins. It's about who gets remembered. It's about whose stories matter. It's about whether America will acknowledge the full truth of our history—the ugly parts and the heroic struggles to overcome them—or retreat into comfortable myths about the founding fathers while erasing everyone else.

The 99% know the truth: America was built by everyone. By enslaved people who survived unspeakable horror. By women who fought for decades to vote. By children like Ruby Bridges who walked through hate with courage we can barely imagine.

Those stories deserve to be on our currency. Trump's narcissism doesn't.

Resist. Remember. Don't let them erase our history.
