These broadly map onto three mechanisms of behavioral regulation: Reinforcement learning, social norms-reputation concerns, & cognitive dissonance.

What predicts cooperation in experimental games?
Expectations of partner behavior, preferences for conditional cooperation, & punishment seem to matter the most. Other commonly studied factors (e.g., time pressure, proximity) were much less important.
