Emma Reynolds, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, says that employers are not working people. And that putting yet another 2p on income tax for landlords and savers is somehow not income tax.
She’s the no.2 minister in the Treasury and attends Cabinet.
This is not alright.
Throughout the Budget process she must have been fully briefed on its impact so that when she steps out to defend it she can do so without totally messing up.
This is not a misstatement on a complex point. This is not an error on a series of figures where one goes awry. This is a fundamental misstatement of the structure of the the UK economy and its tax system. This is serious failing in basic competency.
I regularly defend politicians I disagree with over missteps and oversights. On this occasion i think Emma Reynolds should consider her position.
My latest for @scribehound is on the runway. This month I hatch a plot to take the government to court. It's simplicity itself, provided we can get the NFU, RSPB, CA, WT, CLA and every other countryside and wildlife organisation to hold hands. Oh, and raise a few million quid
More of those imaginary waterfowl settling in to roost on farmland near the Norwich to Tilbury pylons. These geese cross the route daily and are risk of collision if the power lines are built. But National Grid refuses to do farmland surveys. Sound up!
Chief Secretary to the Treasury Emma Reynolds' statement that employers are not 'working people' is contradicted by Labour statements during the 2024 election campaign.
Keir Starmer, Asked if he fell into his own description of “working man”, he said: “Yes, I’m a working person, I come within my own definition of a working person, which is earning my living, paying my taxes and knowing what it means to save money.”
Rachel Reeves stated that "working people are people who get their income from going out to work everyday, and also pensioners that have worked all their lives and are now in retirement, drawing down on their pensions.” (She added that "there are people who do have savings, who have been able to save up and those are working people as well.")
It's clear that employers are included in these definitions. That Burnham's Labour Party has a different anti-employer definition is indeed worrying.
@EmmaforWycombe either needs to issue a retraction and grovelling apology or be unceremoniously sacked (or both). Failure for either to happen will just confirm what a lot of us have long suspected - this @UKLabour Govt utter despise business.
Oh no, the absolute horror.
Emma Reynolds has just informed the nation on GB News that people who own businesses are not, in fact, “working people.”
Truly devastating news. Next she’ll reveal that the people who stay up all night doing the books, dealing with staff, chasing invoices and hoping they don’t go under also somehow aren’t working. #BeggarsBelief
@andyburnham@UKLabour
Employers aren’t working people??
Employing people is one of the hardest jobs there is. And Labour are making it harder.
Building the team to make a business grow is rewarding but also a massive challenge - be great if someone in Labour understood this.
I’m not a working person apparently @EmmaforWycombe 😱🤯
Funny that. Because I haven’t had a day off in about 6 weeks. I work 70 hours a week. I wake up and I’m on my phone working, before bed I’m on my laptop working. During the day I’m in service, serving our guests. But I’m not a working person?
This @UKLabour party need to PISS OFF!
Labour are heading to a defeat at the next GE, whether it be in 2027 or 2029. People have had enough. I am sick of working 70 hour weeks, for what?! HMRC enjoys lots of lovely £££££ whilst I kill myself to make it for them. I am done.

This is pure evil. I’m surprised anyone in this government has time to talk since their tounge seems to be permanently planted on the home builders federation’s boots. It will be the poorest communities that will suffer the most from losing nature under this exemption 😡
