"Symmetry is what this kind of mapping aims for: not mapping in a way such that the map is symmetrical to the world, but in a way that the map is symmetrical to what humans know about the world."

@ffaebi This is great!
On similar lines I was thinking of making something to show me how far I can get with an SBB Tageskarte like set a max time radius from home
Google will say "we are not showing street lights in Miami unless the dataset is 100% complete" (it shows none)
OSM will have one user slowly adding a fee street lights a week for years until completion then updating it a year later and then 5 years later
The major weakness of OSM is there many POIs, street lights, etc. yet not consistently. Hamburg has street lights intensely, then Miami has about none mapped. All have POIs, but often half mapped.
It's a problem solved by constant contribution (OSM) or else exclusion (Google)
@ilyazver You cannot find street lights typically, definitely sure.
But awesome this particular dataset is in there.
My point is there are countless other datasets like this not on OSM that may have a future being so. Tons of built infrastructure datasets. Many not open data. ๐
Map data goes deep. Huge dataset here that isn't the type of stuff you see in OSM or Google Maps typically but which can information info like lighted paths
Vancouver updated their street lighting conduit and poles dataset on Monday.
Anyone working in the telco and/or engineering space in BC should probably look at this.
Five Parquet files in total (service panels, junction boxes, abandoned circuits).

Around the time that Windows 11 rolled out, I accidentally tripped on a power cable and broke my laptop USB charging port. Eventually started to look like repair cost be better reinvested to new machine. I switched to Linux on a new Lenovo and it's been spectacular.
@ffaebi Fascinating. I saw a cool coffee museum in Cuba awhile back. I need to dig up the map of the coffee trade.
I read some interesting stuff about countries that are good for coffee growing but where industry collapses due to geopolitics in the past that I wonder if will revitalize
@SimonHoiberg It's a weird time in life. So incredibly temporary to have the kids be this young (mine too). I am incredibly happy my kids get to spend this time born and growing up in Switzerland even if it's not for the long term (but I plan to make it so). They will know this as home.
@TensorTemplar@lukas_m_ziegler@microagi Do you have outdoor/map data level work as well or is it mainly indoor scene understanding? Very curious to follow your journey and hope to cross paths in the Zรผrich area
@ffaebi@balintszy@Tesla I rented electric in LA a few years ago and had to charge before returning to the airport and during the final hours before the flight absolutely could not find a charger on Google Maps, was crazy. I stopped at 3 search results and nothing.
Do people use the Tesla nav for POIs?
@ffaebi@balintszy@Tesla What are the most popular charging station map apps? Or just whatever is built into Tesla? Curious to talk to somebody who builds them
