My take on this, for whatever it’s worth, is that people are reading into it a depth that it doesn’t have. The simpler read is that American liberalism has been intellectually enfeebled by having it too easy for too long. All liberals had to do was mouth a few incantatory words, and the world would cower before them. Now the magic has lost its power, and some are realizing it more quickly than others.
On this day in 1776, a 21-year old man from Connecticut named Nathan Hale was hanged by the British after going undercover to help George Washington defend New York. His dying speech, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country," inspired millions. RIP patriot
@razibkhan What changed is that the imprimatur of our most reputable institutions has been (sometimes tacitly, other times explicitly) put behind the claim that to not affirm every self-conception of trans people is an act of identity erasure tantamount to physical violence.
@grinnell555@jasetaro@LauraPowellEsq The Founders believed that “all men are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights,” and “that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men.” That this is the foundational premise of our system is not even kind of in dispute.
@AliceFromQueens Recognizing that more things being locked up is a response to increased theft, and feeling uneasy bc increased theft may mean an increase in the number of people potentially willing to do you harm, seems…not that crazy. “Just order online” is not a response to that
@Godel_number @H_Kissingher @wanyeburkett I took it as him essentially brushing off the moral question as posed — I’m not sure it’s even arguable that “all” the civilians “deserve” to die — and saying that, if they kill all our people, he’s killing all theirs, full stop
Old Soviet joke:
"Why was the flight delayed for an hour?"
"The pilot saw a problem with one of the engines, but it's okay now."
"Wow, you've replaced an engine in an hour?"
"No, we've replaced the pilot."
Talking to a group of pleasant, clever socialists last night, it hit me that the defining characteristic of the Left is not compassion; rather, it is the conviction that compassion is unique to their side, leading to a grotesque misunderstanding of what the other side thinks.
RT for awareness. Tax code is already punitive to poker players (you get taxed on winning years but can't write off losing years unless you file as a pro; it's easy to have a down year even as a good player) and Senate-passed version of OBBBA would make it considerably worse.
@Vibutler_@dictator_energy@whstancil They’re demonstrating that they don’t want to lose their livelihoods and are explicitly resisting in the name of their fellow countrymen alone. Nothing wrong with that in a vacuum, but there’s no sign of any sort of principled stance against fascism for the sake of America itself
@CantEverDie What @YIMBYLAND is obviously getting at here is that people would be far more sympathetic to this resistance if they felt that the resisters wanted to stay *because they love this place*, which could be signaled by, among other things, waving an American flag. Seems indisputable.
@ladidaix@wavelettes There’s nothing *morally* wrong with it, but it’s factually wrong by pretty much any measure of human well-being and an irritating sentiment to bear given that it seems to come almost exclusively from those most well off relative to an all-around-better-off world
