Following endless weeks of misreporting relating to the asbestos on the site of the former Ulster Weavers factory on Maldon Street, this thread attempts to highlight the failures of all involved

I don't understand what Sinn Fein and Mary Lou McDonalds problem with the march on Garvaghy road is
In 2024 she made it perfectly clear that in democratic societies we let people "Express their views and nobody gets a veto on who is in their community and you can't say no"
What's the problem now?
Something that was settled 28 years ago in favour of the majority and for the greater good of society at large - "sacrosanct, non-negotiable, we're not going back there, who on their right mind would reopen that old issue?!"
Something that was settled 105 years ago and reaffirmed by a massive majority in a popular referendum 28 years ago??? Oh that's absolutely up for debate every single day, at the expense of good governance and functioning public services, and it will not be settled until they get their way.
I can't stand hypocrisy.
Does the size of the crowd now determine whether the law can be enforced?
If the answer is yes, as appears to be the case on the Garvaghy Road, then this creates a very serious precedent for policing in Northern Ireland
Update on police assessment from ACC Ryan Henderson:
Our assessment was that to remove, at one stage, an estimated 1,000 people from the Garvaghy Road, including women, children and older people would have required such a significant use of force that public safety would have been significantly jeopardised, people seriously hurt and disorder inevitable.
In all of those circumstances use of police force would have been disproportionate. @BelTel
I have no strong view on the Drumcree march. But the Belfast Agreement was predicated on support for the rule of law and constitutional politics. It seems obvious to me that you cannot be the first minister and actively - and unlawfully - seek to block implementation of decisions and orders handed down by your own statutory bodies, the police and the courts. To do so is to make a mockery of your office, of the 1998 agreement, and of the entire political system.
These appear to be the individuals who were directing the foul abuse towards @JamieBrysonLLB and the Unionist representatives in the video below
“Youll not be here for much longer” can only be interpreted in on way
“us”? It has nothing to do with the United States or its residents, we get
This was a democratic decision by a statutory body set up to deal with these issues. Perhaps familiarise yourself with the facts
Residents in NI will take no lectures from American politicians who have no say in decisions made here
Instead of offering opinions on matters that dont concern you, use that energy to lobby your own government about the Strait of Hormuz and the impact of fuel prices on residents living here
Let me get this straight because I am confused.
The Parades Commission are impartial and all their decisions should be upheld.
Until they make a decision I disagree with?
Got it 👍
This Drumcree episode is an interesting one for being a rare example of the last 28 years in reverse. Unionism has, since 1998, watched nationalism repeatedly use the mechanisms available to it to campaign for a united Ireland. While unionism has looked at the removal of articles 2&3 and the end of the troubles as a settlement.
If nationalism looked at the Parades Commission's stance on the Garvaghy Rd as a final settlement they've evidently been naïve to the possibility that unionism might also have other legal mechanisms available to deliver a different outcome. They may also have been naïve in believing they're the only people who can carry a drive to overturn what they see as a historic injustice.
In this instance I really do hope those permitted to march do so with humility, respect and that this presents an opportunity for better community relations in Portadown. Having worked in the town, the Garvaghy Rd was an issue that had certainly passed, but was definitely not settled. People thinking it's inconveniently reared it's head after nearly 3 decades simply weren't paying attention.
@columeastwood Bullying doesn't work.
If it did, the Parades Commission would have caved to republican threats of violence if the parade was allowed to proceed.
Instead, after 28 years, we have seen the rights of the Orangemen of Portadown restored

I’m not suprised one bit as the ‘neutrality’ line is trotted out continuously.
If you want to be neutral you must be able to defend that neutrality. At present Ireland is just helpless not neutral.
I agree with Emma, direct rule isnt good for Northern Ireland
Although its worth noting that the DUPs return to Stormont was based on a deal that left the Irish Sea border in situ
Little-Pengelly says unionists wanting direct rule need to 'get real' - slamming Westminster over 'social policy' and sea border https://t.co/deCfB5qIyF
I am told the Sunday Press may be covering allegations involving a DUP elected representative, marital infidelity, and the painful fallout for the families and others affected.
I have known something of this situation for some time, but I have been reluctant to comment publicly on it. That is not because marital breakdown is unimportant, or because public representatives should be immune from scrutiny. It is because matters like this involve real people, real hurt, and often a wider circle of family members who did not ask to become part of a political story.
There is also a basic humility required. Infidelity is sadly not rare. Some estimates suggest that around one in five marriages may be affected by it in some form. No political party, church, movement, or community is immune from human failure. Anyone who treats another person’s domestic disaster as a political weapon should remember that the same kind of story can one day land much closer to home.
That does not mean serious allegations should be ignored. If there are claims involving public conduct, abuse of position, financial impropriety, or other matters beyond private immorality, they should be examined properly and fairly. Public office carries responsibilities.
But there should be no schadenfreude in any of this. A broken home is not entertainment, and the suffering of a family should not become a spectator sport. Families caught up in these situations deserve some dignity, even where wrong has clearly been done. Serious wrongdoing should be addressed seriously; personal tragedy should not be gloated over.
The Loyalists in Ulster are some of the best Brits. Patriotic, no nonsense, not afflicted with wokery & willing to stand up for British & traditional Protestant heritage. That's not an opinion. It's an objective fact 🇬🇧

Re: Distillery Street Redevelopment Scheme
Belfast City Council Planning Officer "There is no evidence the proposal would lead to increased unrest and anti-social behaviour."
Despite roden street residents living in turmoil for the past 36 months, despite PSNI FOI revealing they responded to over 500 incidents from 2024 at this interface, despite the plethora of photographic and video evidence showing youths using the location to attack innocent civilians, homes and vehicles council officers know best
Its high time nationalist politicians and community reps from the Grosvenor community got this knocked on the head
For the 6th day this week homes in the Roden Street community have come under attack
No community should face sustained attacks on their homes and vehicles simply because they are protestant
The tone deaf @belfastcc must discharge its statutory duties under Section 75 of the NI Act 1998 and ensure a project specific equality screening is carried out for the Distillery Street PEACEPLUS project before any planning application is approved
