@yuqirose @ucsd_cse I applied to the physics dept in 2022, spent my entire savings that cycle for apps and TOEFL. None of the UCs gave me waivers, told me no waivers for int'l students. Never looked at UCs again and I'm happy

i don't think all academics are driven by trauma. but academia attracts ppl who experienced school as a central space of validation, maybe the only place they were ever praised/"seen." also, academic accomplishments are wielded to counter parental neglect & societal debasement.
