@NYS_IRC Queens County Meeting
Thursday, February 16 4:00pm
(LOCATION CHANGE)
York College (CUNY)
Faculty Dining Room
94-20 Guy R. Brewer Boulevard
Jamaica, New York 11451
As we see all of this unfold we believe the city needs to brace itself for another wave of change next year when the @NYCCouncil begins their election cycle. Those lines in many cases have changed more dramatically. Thank you @bcuza for your reporting on this...
We don't agree. Here is why...
☑️Truncated Primary leading to low participation
☑️ Campaigns constantly adjusting through each challenge to the lines
☑️ Lines that turned blue areas purple, purple areas red hurt Democrats
https://t.co/c6k7jzZmvf
We believe that once the process left the @NYS_IRC the legislature failed to course correct creating #fairmaps. Instead they went behind closed doors and yielded to the powerful protecting incumbency. In a few months they had to yield to a Special Master.
Redistricting in New York looked pretty bleak in 2021, with a possibility of the map being 23 Dem and 3 Republican. Instead, the final result is 15 Dem and 11 GOP, the most GOP reps for the state since 2000 (when NY had 31 seats, 19D-12R).
It's been lost amid all the finger pointing over how Democrats botched redistricting in New York (and performed poorly on Election Day) but NY also lost one of its House seats by coming up 89 people short in the 2020 census https://t.co/rebrfR6ucu
If the Dems end up losing the House, I think it can be said that they lost it in New York: they blew redistricting, and then they badly underperformed a still-very-winnable set of districts, even while faring well elsewhere
will cost the Dems of @NYCCouncil in the upcoming 2023 election All arrows point to the spread of Red across NY state. It is unimaginable that the party that practically controlled the process could botch it so badly that those at the heart of it are now without a job.
The mismanagement of the NY state redistricting by the legislators and operatives - not the @NYS_IRC is what cost @nydems this last election. It was the @NYWFP and progressives that saved the Dems from a devastating loss to Zeldin. That hubris is what we believe...
We want to uplift the work @DesisRisingUp has done. We too agree that the commission did not go far enough. We are disappointed that South Asians are still waiting .... This should not have happened with such a progressive @NYCCouncil@NYCProgressives
With the @DistrictingNYC proposed map vote going thru @NYCCouncil in the next few days, we wanted to share some reflections and lessons learned from DRUM members in impacted districts who engaged in the process with @apavoicenewyork and fought for the #UnityMap 🧵
“The City Council @DistrictingNYC map is set to divide the Bukharian Jewish Community of Forest Hills & Rego Park into 3 separate Council districts,” @DavidforQueens wrote. “This will dilute the community’s voice & further prevent any chance of representation.”
We Agree!!!
Our coalition is immensely disappointed w/ the final result of the City Council redistricting process. Today, the @NYCCouncil had the opportunity to reject the @DistrictingNYC proposed map and instead push for better City Council District lines. See our statement below..
These are concerns that we have been raising over and over again. @DavidforQueens understands the dramatic impact this will have on the community he loves. We truly hope that @NYCSpeakerAdams@Lynn4NYC will do the right thing and correct these divisions.

These lines will change how our city is cared for and shaped. They can be better. @Lynn4NYC@NYCSpeakerAdams demand better!
The agenda for the @NYCCouncil stated meeting (10/27) is live and at this point there is no mention of the proposed city council lines. This could indicate that the maps will be adopted as is. We will have to live w/ the lines for 10 yrs. Not much happens in 10 yrs - right?
