🚨We need a massive awareness campaign for energy demand reduction🚨
Not just ‘drive less’…e.g. we spend BILLIONS £/$/€ a year creating light pollution. We could solve huge spend/energy/biodiversity problems by *literally tweaking the angle* of streetlights/“security” lights.
It's International Dark Sky Week Apr 22-30!

In the climate emergency, the dream of a 24/7 society conflicts with reduced emission targets. Night-time commerce is inefficient because it needs extra light, heat and services. So why not reserve precious renewable energy for essential and domestic use? #COP26#uselightwisely
(This photograph from Melvyn Taylor shows an example of bad lighting leading to wasted energy and needless CO2 pollution. It is far too bright, badly aimed and may also be a dazzling hazard to road users.)
The world must reduce CO2 emissions URGENTLY! 80% of energy still comes from fossil fuels. Until renewables take over, wasting any energy is hard to justify. Every gm of CO2 counts. Artificial light uses energy which causes CO2, so we at the CfDS say #USELIGHTWISELY. #COP26
Is Government serious about climate change? One contribution towards tackling climate change is to control wasteful lighting. We need light at night, but only when and where required. Positive action on light pollution will show that government cares.

(The orange glows at the edge of this all-sky photograph shows one thing - wasted energy! It was taken from the Wiltshire countryside at the end of the last century, before the age of the LEDs. The image was made by our friend Mike Tabb, who is greatly missed.)
#COP26 Light pollution is energy waste made visible.
The glow that hangs over cities, glaring over-bright lights on houses, car parks, factories is the veil of wasted light that hides the stars at night.
Most outdoor lights are too bright and too white.
#USELIGHTWISELY
#COP26 begins TODAY! Fixing #lightpollution would be a quick win for the fight against #ClimateEmergency, government debt, worsening public health and #biodiversitycrisis.
Light pollution wastes BILLIONS in energy every year, directly harming wildlife + humans. Support our work!
Ahead of #COP26, please read and share our leaflet "Light Pollution and Health".
Light pollution wastes BILLIONS in energy every year, and particularly due to new blue-rich light, is a direct contributor to #biodiversity loss.

The British Astronomical Association's Commission for Dark Skies (https://t.co/cS9n4EfJkQ) supports the APPGDarkSkies. We need to regain the natural night for all Earth's life through star-quality lighting. The existence of the APPGDark Skies is a big step towards this.
@ChrisGPackham Chris, one certain way we can make the lives of our nocturnal wildlife more viable is by controlling stray artificial light. The rise of LEDs is turning night into day.

On Thursday 7th June @NottinghamAstro welcomes Bob Mizon to give a talk on @cfds_uk 'Dark Future? - what future for Britain's darkest skies'. Join us for refreshments from 7.30pm at Gotham Hall. The talk will start at 8pm. Non-Members are most welcome.
@cfds_uk This is what it’s like outside our house at 00:30 thanks to @Hillingdon recently adding to the light pollution in my road. It’s basically day time out there. #lightpollution
