In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

@tomTL1984 The early 20th Century Brooklyn test is actually a pretty good test for modernity-can a working class person enjoy access to basic, functional services of modern life at an affordable price? Its by this measure Japan and urban East Asia are near the top.

If they have in fact PIPed so close to the sun that they’ve ran through the entire US tech labor force, this will be an economics case study for the ages
genuinely hate how in every area of life, Americans have to stand guard to protect themselves from being scammed because our institutions are rotten. buying a car, going to the dentist, even the most mundane activities could wreak financial havoc if you’re not on high alert

The only thing I have to say on the 25th anniversary is what Hunter S Thompson said in the aftermath. There's been few things said more prescient than the party's over. For someone like me who partied like hell in the 90's, 21stC has been very different. The party is still over.
In Las Vegas, comedian George Carlin tests a new set called “I Kind of Like It When A Lot of People Die.”
In the set he talks about a variety of distasteful subjects, including a plane exploding and it being blamed on Osama bin Laden.
Also a common observation of the developing world rich.
You might have a $100k watch on your wrist, but if you have to step over uncovered & untreated sewage as you leave your office, how wealthy are you meaningfully? Does not the social inequality degrade you as well?
