So they launched the capacity market to keep old units around. They did that so well people complained about bills

- Branded spring water: collect at nearby spring, filter at plant, bottle and truck to store.
- Gasoline: Drill down 2 miles, turn sideways and continue another 2-4 miles. Run steel pipe and cement through hole. Punch small holes in pipe. Send water/sand mixture down pipe at extreme pressures to fracture rock. Separate streams of oil/gas/water at surface. Truck oil to nearest pipeline where it travels 800 miles to refinery. Treat crude to remove impurities. Heat crude to >700° to separate into different products including gasoline. Remove sulfur and other remaining contaminants. Move to large storage tank. Blend with ethanol, naptha, and other products that require complex chemistry to meet octane and clean fuel specs. Truck on specialized tanker to underground tank at gas station.

@xiaowang1984 @JavierBlas Yeah, incentives. You only get paid for active power while stability is a contractual requirement. That won’t solve acute issues. Even if it seems obvious I’m not surprised operators are only now realizing the design issue. No one gilded the grid.

@xiaowang1984 Your broader point about “grid aligned with the physics” I think is actually better encapsulated in that DC powerflow will never appropriately value reactive power so market design gets wonky.

@xiaowang1984 Correct. This is an economic dispatch issue where wind is causing congestion issues nodally and the ramp rate requirements are spiking congestion. Being both tech agnostic and trying to match market outcomes to technological outcomes, you need to just increase your AS.

@xiaowang1984 SPP has wind ramp limits to 8 MW/min in either direction. I’ve thought this dynamic was better solved with increased AS procurement because you end up with some really funky congestion outcomes due to failure to curtail efficiently. There, increased revenue isn’t the issue.
